Itinerary at a Glance
A 14-Day New Zealand Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Auckland (AKL). Stay Sofitel Viaduct Harbour. Walk Mt Eden volcano for city panorama at sunset.
Day 2 — Drive Auckland → Coromandel Peninsula (2 hrs). Cathedral Cove + Hot Water Beach.
Day 3 — Drive to Tongariro NP (5 hrs). Tongariro Alpine Crossing trailhead. Stay Chateau Tongariro.
Day 4 — Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19km, 7 hrs). The famous Emerald Lakes + Red Crater + Blue Lake — one of the world’s great day hikes. Mt Doom (Ngauruhoe).
Day 5 — Cross to the South Island. Fastest: drive to Wellington, fly WLG → CHC (1.5 hrs in the air, half-day total). Slowest and best: drive to Wellington, Interislander or Bluebridge ferry across Cook Strait (3.5 hrs through the Marlborough Sounds — dolphins, fjord light, do the open-deck the whole way), then drive south. Tap the map chip to see both. Either way, finish in Lake Tekapo (3 hrs from Christchurch).
Day 6 — Lake Tekapo. Church of the Good Shepherd at dawn + Mt John Observatory. Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve — astrophotography headquarters. Stay out for the Milky Way.
Day 7 — Drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook NP (1 hr). Sunset at Tasman Lake.
Day 8 — Hooker Valley + Mueller Hut. Hooker Valley Track (10km easy, iconic Mt Cook view).
Day 9 — Drive to Queenstown (3.5 hrs via Lindis Pass). Glenorchy road at golden hour, Bob’s Cove at blue hour. In winter the Remarkables turn pink at sunset over Lake Wakatipu.
Day 10 — Milford Sound day trip. 4.5-hr drive via Te Anau (or fly from Queenstown). Boat through the fiord — Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls. Best at dawn after overnight rain. Overnight Te Anau.
Day 11 — Drive Te Anau → Wanaka (3.5 hrs via Crown Range). The ‘Wanaka Tree’ (lone willow in the lake) at sunset.
Day 12 — Wanaka morning + Haast Pass. Roy’s Peak at sunrise (8-hr RT, brutal climb) or the Wanaka Tree again with no crowds, then drive Haast Pass to Fox/Franz Josef Glaciers (3.5 hrs).
Day 13 — Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers. Lake Matheson at dawn for the Mt Cook/Tasman reflection. Glacier-helicopter heli-hike (weather-dependent).
Day 14 — West Coast exit + departure. Punakaiki Pancake Rocks blowholes at high tide on the drive north, then Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch for the evening flight. Or extend with Bay of Islands.
Best photographer windows: late February through March — autumn color in Wanaka + Central Otago, fewer crowds, stable weather. November for spring wildflowers + lupins around Lake Tekapo. Plan the Cook Strait crossing for a clear day in either direction — the Marlborough Sounds light is what photographers came for. Late February is also peak Milky Way core on the Tekapo Dark Sky Reserve.
