Itinerary at a Glance
A 14-Day Western Australia Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Perth (PER). Decompress. Sunset at Kings Park overlook for the city + Swan River. Stay COMO The Treasury or Ritz-Carlton Perth.
Day 2 — Drive Perth → Cervantes (2 hr) → Pinnacles. Sunset at the Pinnacles Desert (Nambung NP) — yellow sand + limestone spires rising from the dunes. Drive the 4WD-only loop track. Stay Cervantes Pinnacles Motel.
Day 3 — Drive Cervantes → Wave Rock (5 hr southeast). Hyden’s iconic 15-m wave-shaped granite outcrop. 110-m long, 2.7-billion-year-old formation. Long drive but worth it. Overnight Hyden Wave Rock Hotel.
Day 4 — Drive to Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand (5 hr). Transit south-east to Esperance. The Cape Le Grand NP coastline is white-quartz-sand beaches against turquoise water — Lucky Bay rated Australia’s whitest sand. Kangaroos on the beach. Stay Esperance.
Day 5 — Drive to Perth + fly north to Coral Bay (via PER). Long drive back to Perth (720 km, 8 hr — or fly Esperance → Perth), then fly to Learmonth (LEA, 90 min) + drive 1.5 hr south. Coral Bay base — resident manta rays feed right off the beach. Stay Coral Bay Eco Lodge.
Day 6 — Ningaloo Reef + Cape Range NP. Snorkel the reef directly from shore — turtle, manta ray, tropical fish. Whale shark season Mar–Aug is a unique world-class snorkel-with-megafauna opportunity. Sunset at Yardie Creek Gorge in Cape Range NP. Stay Exmouth or Sal Salis.
Day 7 — Drive Exmouth → Karijini National Park (630 km, 7 hr via Nanutarra). Long inland transit into the Pilbara. Stay Karijini Eco Retreat or campground.
Day 8 — Karijini gorges. Iron-rich red rock gorges (Hancock, Weano, Joffre, Knox, Kalamina). Mostly multi-class swim-and-scramble to access. Hamersley Gorge spider-web fold pattern. Sunrise at Oxer Lookout (junction of 4 gorges).
Day 9 — Karijini → Broome (1,100 km, 11 hr via Port Hedland — or backtrack to Karratha and fly). The longest haul of the trip; break it at Port Hedland if driving. Stay Broome.
Day 10 — Cable Beach + Broome. Pre-dawn at Cable Beach (22 km of pristine white sand). Camel-train silhouettes against sunset — iconic WA shot, runs Apr–Oct daily. Sun Pictures outdoor cinema. Stay Cable Beach Club.
Day 11–12 — Bungle Bungle Range (Purnululu NP). Fly Broome → Halls Creek + 4WD into the NP, OR scenic flight from Kununurra. Beehive striped domes — UNESCO World Heritage, only accessible Apr–Oct. Cathedral Gorge (1.8 km walk from the southern carpark — wide-angle for the natural amphitheatre ceiling) + Echidna Chasm hikes. Stay Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge or Kimberleyland.
Day 13 — Mitchell Falls (heli + 4WD). Spectacular 4-tier 80-m falls deep in the Kimberley. Self-drive on Gibb River Road is a wet-season impossibility — fly into Mitchell Plateau airstrip + heli to the falls. Aboriginal rock art in the surrounding caves.
Day 14 — Fly Kununurra or Broome → Perth + depart.
Best photographer window: April to October (austral winter dry season) — only accessible window for the Kimberley + Pilbara. Whale shark season (Mar–Aug) for Ningaloo. Wildflower season (Aug–Oct) for Pinnacles + south-west — Australia has the world’s largest wildflower diversity. Avoid wet season (Nov–Mar) for north WA — roads closed, cyclones.
