Itinerary at a Glance
An 18-Day Patagonia Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Balmaceda (BBA), drive north to Puyuhuapi (5 hrs). Pick up 4WD in Coyhaique. The Carretera Austral begins immediately — turquoise rivers and temperate rainforest. Stay Puyuhuapi Lodge.
Day 2 — Queulat Hanging Glacier. Morning trail to the Ventisquero Colgante viewpoint (3.3km, 2.5 hrs). The glacier hangs between rock walls with twin waterfalls pouring off its lip — include them for scale. Overcast skies reduce harsh contrast on the white ice.
Day 3 — Drive south to Puerto Río Tranquilo (7 hrs). Long but spectacular day on the Carretera Austral, ending on the shore of Lago General Carrera.
Day 4 — Marble Caves by boat. Morning light illuminates the Catedral de Mármol from inside — turquoise water bounces colour onto the sculpted marble. Boats (or kayaks on calm days) leave from Río Tranquilo; lower water levels mean more vivid colour.
Day 5 — Fly south to El Calafate (FTE). Return to Balmaceda and fly via Puerto Montt/Santiago (or budget two long days on Argentina’s legendary RN-40 gravel instead). Pick up 4WD. Stay Eolo or Design Suites Calafate. Sunset light on Lago Argentino.
Day 6 — Drive to El Chaltén (3.5 hrs). Argentina’s hiking capital, base for Fitz Roy + Cerro Torre. Stay Aguas Arriba Lodge or Hotel Posada Lunajuim.
Day 7 — Laguna de los Tres (Fitz Roy day hike). 20km round-trip, 10 hrs, 900m gain. Final 1km is steep scree to the laguna at the base of Fitz Roy. Pre-dawn start for sunrise light on the granite spires.
Day 8 — Laguna Torre or rest day. Easier hike to the base of Cerro Torre (18km RT, 6 hrs). OR rest day in El Chaltén — sunset from Mirador Los Cóndores above town.
Day 9 — Return to El Calafate + Perito Moreno Glacier. Drive back south (3.5 hrs), then 80km out to the glacier for the afternoon — light is best on the north face then. Walk the network of catwalks at multiple elevations. Stay for calving events (ice slabs the size of buildings cracking into the lake).
Day 10 — Drive south to Torres del Paine, Chile (8 hrs). Cross border at Cancha Carrera (allow 2 hrs). Stay Tierra Patagonia, Explora Patagonia (luxury), or Hosteria Las Torres (budget).
Day 11 — Base Torres Viewpoint hike. 22km RT, 10 hrs, 800m gain. The final hour is a brutal moraine boulder field — then the lake + the three vertical granite towers appear. Sunrise alpenglow is the goal — START AT 4am.
Day 12 — Lago Pehoé + Cuernos viewpoint + Salto Grande waterfall. Easier driving day. Sunset from Lago Pehoé looking back at Los Cuernos (the iconic horns).
Day 13 — Grey Glacier kayak or boat. Kayak among icebergs in Lago Grey OR catamaran tour to the glacier face. Half-day option.
Day 14 — Drive Torres del Paine → Punta Arenas (5 hrs). Stop at Cueva del Milodón (giant sloth fossil cave). Stay Cabo de Hornos or Dreams del Estrecho.
Day 15 — Penguin Colonies of Magdalena Island. 2-hr boat trip from Punta Arenas, walk among 60,000+ Magellanic penguins (Oct-Mar season only). Shoot low with a telephoto — they approach if you sit still.
Day 16 — Fly Punta Arenas → Ushuaia (Argentina). Tierra del Fuego — ‘end of the world’. Stay Arakur Resort.
Day 17 — Beagle Channel boat (sea lions + cormorants + Les Eclaireurs lighthouse) + Tierra del Fuego NP hike.
Day 18 — Fly home from Ushuaia.
Best photographer window: late November through early March (Southern Hemisphere summer). November is ideal — wildflowers, fewer crowds than peak Dec-Feb, longer daylight hours but not yet the infamous Patagonian winds at peak. Avoid Mar-Apr shoulder rains.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Strenuous. The signature hikes are full-day wilderness:
- Laguna de los Tres (Fitz Roy): 20km, 900m gain, 10 hrs. Final scree section is brutal.
- Base Torres: 22km, 800m gain, 10 hrs. Last hour is moraine boulders.
- W Trek (multi-day): 80km over 4-5 days for the classic Torres del Paine traverse. Refugios required.
- Less strenuous alternatives: Lago Pehoé viewpoint (10 min walk), Mirador Las Torres (4-hr RT), Perito Moreno catwalks (paved).
Health + Safety
- Wind: Patagonia’s defining feature. 100+ km/h gusts common Dec-Feb. Hold onto trekking poles, don’t open car doors fully, secure tripods.
- Weather changes by the hour. Bring full rain/wind shell + warm layers regardless of forecast.
- Sun: ozone hole effect — UV is brutal in summer. Sunscreen + sunglasses non-negotiable.
- Border crossings Argentina ↔ Chile: allow 2 hrs minimum at Cancha Carrera. No fresh fruit/dairy across.
- Tap water: drinkable in Argentina/Chile tourist areas; filter for backcountry streams.
Cultural Etiquette
- Refugio etiquette in Torres del Paine: early bookings essential (6 months ahead for summer). Quiet hours 10pm-7am.
- Estancias: traditional sheep ranches now tourist lodges. Photographing gauchos working: ask first.
- Drones: BANNED in Torres del Paine NP. Banned in Los Glaciares NP. Permit-only elsewhere.
Permits + Access
- Argentina + Chile: visa-free for US/EU/AU/UK 90 days.
- Torres del Paine NP entry: 35,000 CLP (~$40), 3-day pass.
- Los Glaciares NP (Fitz Roy + Perito Moreno): free entry, no permits.
- W Trek refugios: bookings open Aug for following season at vertice.travel + lascpatagonia.com.
