Itinerary at a Glance
A 14-Day East Africa Photography Safari Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Nairobi (NBO). The circuit runs Tanzania → Kenya, so JRO is the natural start. Transfer to Arusha, the safari gateway town. Overnight at airport hotel.
Day 2 — Drive Arusha → Ngorongoro. Scenic 3.5-hr drive up the Great Rift escarpment to the rim. Stay Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (rim views).
Day 3 — Ngorongoro Crater game drive. 600 m down the rim wall into the 260 km² crater floor. Densest concentration of large mammals on Earth: elephants, lions, rhinos, hippos, flamingos at Lake Magadi. Best access pre-dawn (gates open 6am).
Day 4 — Ngorongoro → Seronera Valley (central Serengeti). Drive in through Naabi Hill gate with game viewing en route, or take the 45-min bush flight (Coastal Aviation or Auric Air). Stay Four Seasons Serengeti or Singita Sasakwa.
Day 5–6 — Central Serengeti (Seronera). Full-day game drives in the big-cat heart of the valley. Year-round resident lion prides, leopards in sausage trees + acacia, cheetah on the open plains. Hippos at Retina Hippo Pool. Hot-air balloon safari pre-dawn (optional, $600+ pp).
Day 7 — West to the Grumeti River crossing (western corridor). Migration follows rains:
- Dec–Mar: south Serengeti (calving season Feb)
- Apr–May: central, moving north
- Jun–Jul: western corridor + Grumeti River crossings (crocodile ambushes)
- Aug–Oct: Mara River crossings (Tanzania side or Kenya Mara side)
- Nov: returning south
Grumeti crossings are quieter than the Mara — fewer vehicles, more intimate — and massive Nile crocodiles up to 5 m lurk at the crossing points.
Day 8 — Fly Serengeti → Masai Mara (Kenya); first stop the Sand River crossing. International crossing — Kenya side of the same ecosystem. The herds enter the Mara right here, wading the shallow Sand River on the Tanzanian border. Private conservancy camps nearby offer night drives + off-road access not available inside the main reserve. Stay Mara Plains Camp or Angama Mara.
Day 9 — The Mara River main crossing (Jul–Oct only). The iconic wildebeest-jump-into-crocodile-jaws spot. Crossing chaos peaks Jul–Sep: thousands of animals funnel down the banks while crocodiles and big cats wait. Set up at major crossings hours in advance — Crossing Point 1 is most consistent. Patience + long telephoto (400–600mm from the banks).
Day 10 — Masai Mara plains. Mara North + Olare Motorogi conservancies for off-road access (park itself doesn’t allow off-track). Big cats + elephant herds. Optional Maasai village visit.
Day 11 — Fly Mara → Nairobi Wilson, drive to Lake Nakuru. 50-min Safarilink hop, then a 3-hr drive up the Rift (or charter direct). The Lake Nakuru flamingos mass in the alkaline shallows when water levels cooperate, and the fenced rhino sanctuary holds both black + white rhinos. Baboon Cliff at golden hour gives an aerial perspective over the pink lake. Stay Mbweha Camp.
Day 12 — Fly Nakuru → Amboseli; sunset at Observation Hill. Bush-flight hop south via Wilson (90 min flying total) or a full-day scenic drive. Afternoon climb of Observation Hill — the 360-degree panorama takes in the Enkongo Narok swamp, strings of elephants below, and Kilimanjaro behind. Stay Tortilis Camp.
Day 13 — Dawn elephants beneath Kilimanjaro. The classic view of Kilimanjaro from Amboseli — a bull elephant silhouetted against the snowcap — is sharpest before 10am; afternoon clouds typically roll in by noon. Work the swamp edges at first light for elephants against the mountain.
Day 14 — Final game drive + fly to NBO + depart. Pre-dawn drive in Amboseli, then the short flight to Wilson and transfer to Nairobi for the international flight.
Best photographer window: late August to October for Mara River crossings (most dramatic, but most crowded). February for calving in southern Serengeti (predator action at its highest density). June–July for Grumeti River crossings (Tanzania side, less crowded). Dry season (Jun–Oct) gives best general game viewing as animals concentrate at water sources.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Beginner. Vehicle-based — minimal hiking:
- Game drives: 6–8 hr days in safari vehicles (Land Cruiser, often roof-opening). Hot, dusty.
- Ngorongoro Crater: drive down + up via rim road. Standard 4WD.
- Balloon safari: 1-hr early-morning flight over the plains.
- Walking safaris (optional, some camps): 1–3 hr with armed ranger.
Wildlife Photography
- Best hours: pre-dawn to 9am, then 4pm to sunset.
- Gear: 100–500mm minimum for cats + general. 200–600mm for serious wildlife work. Wide angle for landscape + scale.
- Vehicle stability: bring a beanbag for window/roof rests.
- Dust protection: lens cleaning regular. Body bags for cameras.
- Light: Equatorial — sun is straight overhead 10am–3pm. Avoid mid-day for serious shooting.
Weather + Migration
- Dry season (Jun–Oct): 15–25°C, no rain, dusty, animals concentrate at water. Peak crowds.
- Short rains (Nov–Dec): 18–25°C, 5–10 mm/day, green flush returns.
- Long rains (Mar–May): heavy rain, some camps close, off-season prices. Some operators love it for moody light.
- Migration tracking: ask outfitters who’s moving where day-to-day.
Permits + Cultural
- Tanzania visa: $50–$100 e-visa, 90 days.
- Kenya visa: $50 e-visa.
- Park fees: $80–$160 per person per day, paid by lodge.
- Conservancy fees (Mara conservancies): $80–$160 additional.
- Drones: banned in all national parks + conservancies in both Kenya + Tanzania.
- Maasai/Samburu communities: photograph people only with permission + small payment ($1–5 customary).
