Itinerary at a Glance

A 10-Day Yellowstone + Grand Teton Photography Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Jackson Hole (JAC). Pick up 4WD. Drive 30 min north into Grand Teton NP. Sunset at Schwabacher Landing for the Teton range reflected in beaver ponds. Stay Jackson or Moose.

Day 2 — Grand Teton. Pre-dawn at Snake River Overlook (Ansel Adams’ classic frame), then Oxbow Bend for cottonwood reflections + moose sightings. Mid-day Mormon Row barns (T.A. Moulton + John Moulton).

Day 3 — Teton wildlife + drive north. Cascade Canyon or String Lake at dawn for grizzly + moose. Mid-day drive into Yellowstone south entrance (1 hr). Lewis Falls, Yellowstone Lake. Overnight Old Faithful Snow Lodge or Lake Yellowstone Hotel.

Day 4 — Geyser basins. Pre-dawn at Old Faithful for first eruption + steam in cold air. Then 15 min north to Grand Prismatic Spring — hike the overlook trail from the Fairy Falls trailhead and shoot the spring from above at mid-day, when the colors are most vivid. Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk in afternoon light.

Day 5 — North to Hayden Valley. Early start over Craig Pass and up the Yellowstone Lake shore. Hayden Valley for the morning wildlife mix — bison herds, grizzlies, sandhill cranes along the Yellowstone River. Mid-day Norris Geyser Basin (Steamboat Geyser unpredictable). Back to Hayden at dusk. Overnight Canyon Village.

Day 6 — Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Artist Point at dawn for Lower Falls + canyon yellow walls lit golden-orange in morning light. Uncle Tom’s Trail for the low angle. Afternoon drive north over Dunraven Pass — mid-day Tower Fall + Calcite Springs. Overnight Roosevelt or Cooke City.

Day 7 — Lamar Valley wildlife. Pre-dawn drive into Lamar Valley (40 min from Roosevelt). ‘Serengeti of North America’ — wolves, bison herds, grizzlies, pronghorn. Stay until late morning when wildlife retreats; return for the dusk session. Overnight Mammoth or Gardiner.

Day 8 — Mammoth + drive back south. Sunrise at Mammoth Hot Springs — travertine terraces at Palette Spring at golden hour. Then either return via Lamar–Cooke City–Beartooth Pass (highest paved road in the Northern Rockies, only open Jul–Sep) for a long alpine day, OR head back south through the park for missed subjects.

Day 9 — Teton return. Sunrise on Mormon Row if missed. Jackson Hole aerial tram for the alpine overview. Sunset at Jenny Lake.

Day 10 — Departure from Jackson (JAC).

Best photographer window: late September to mid-October — elk rut, golden aspens in Teton, fewer crowds, geyser steam visible in cool air. Jan–Feb for winter steam + snow + the wolves visible on snowy ground (snowcoach access only). June for wildflower displays + long daylight. Avoid July–August midday (crowds + flat light).

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Beginner to moderate. Vast majority of subjects are drive-up or short boardwalks:

  • Geyser basin boardwalks: flat, accessible. Stay ON the boardwalks — thermal water is 90°C and the crust is thin.
  • Fairy Falls / Grand Prismatic overlook: 3.2 km round trip on gravel, moderate uphill. The classic overhead view requires this hike.
  • Mt Washburn: 10.5 km round trip, 460m gain — best summit panorama in the park. Strenuous.
  • Lamar Valley pullouts: drive-up wildlife glassing. Bring 600mm+ for distant subjects.

Wildlife Photography

Yellowstone is North America’s premier wildlife park. Practical rules:

  • Bison: maintain 25m minimum. They charge — every year tourists get gored. Use a long lens, never approach.
  • Bears + wolves: 100m minimum. Carry bear spray in the backcountry.
  • Best hours: pre-dawn to 9am, then 5pm to dark. Mid-day wildlife disappears into shade.
  • Wolf-spotting: Lamar Valley dawn, look for the spotting-scope crowd (the volunteer Yellowstone Wolf Project follows packs daily).

Weather

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): 20–25°C days, 5–10°C nights at elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms common.
  • Fall (Sep–Oct): 5–15°C days, freezing nights. Snow possible from mid-September.
  • Winter (Dec–Mar): −20 to −5°C. Most park roads closed; access via snowcoach + snowmobile only. Wolves easy against snow.
  • Spring (Apr–May): variable, mud season. Wildlife active + young.

Permits

  • Park entry: $35/vehicle/7 days, or $80 America-the-Beautiful annual.
  • Photography permits: required for commercial work + drone (drones banned everywhere in the park).
  • Tripods: allowed on boardwalks if not blocking traffic. Some thermal areas have specific rules.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics

Airports

  • Jackson Hole (JAC) — closest to Grand Teton + south Yellowstone. Limited carriers, more expensive.
  • Bozeman (BZN) — closest to Mammoth + north Yellowstone. More flights, lower fares.
  • Salt Lake City (SLC) — major hub, 5-hr drive to south entrance. Best for cheap long-haul connections.
  • Cody (COD) — east entrance, useful for Beartooth loop.

Lodging

Inside the park (book 12+ months ahead):

  • Old Faithful Inn — 1904 log cathedral, walk to geyser. Photographic in itself.
  • Lake Yellowstone Hotel — colonial revival on Yellowstone Lake.
  • Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel — close to Lamar + north entrance.
  • Roosevelt Lodge (rustic cabins) — closest to Lamar Valley wildlife.

Just outside:

  • Jackson Hole — Four Seasons, Amangani, or budget motels in town.
  • Gardiner, MT (north entrance) — small town, year-round access.
  • Cooke City, MT (northeast) — gateway to Lamar + Beartooth.

Food

Park dining is functional, not memorable. Pack lunches for long shooting days. Jackson Hole has the best restaurants in the region (Snake River Grill, Trio, Glorietta). Stock up on snacks + water at gateway towns — distances between supplies inside the park are 1+ hr.

Transport

  • Rental car required. 4WD recommended Oct–May.
  • Distances: south to north 100 km on park roads (2.5 hr), Lamar to Old Faithful 1.5 hr. The figure-8 loop totals 230 km.
  • Winter access: snowcoaches from Mammoth or West Yellowstone — book ahead. Old Faithful Snow Lodge is the only in-park winter lodging.
  • Beartooth Highway (US-212): only open Jul–early Oct. Adds ~4 hr to the loop but worth it for the alpine drive.

Best Light Windows

  • Pre-dawn to 8am + 5pm to sunset for wildlife.
  • Cold mornings (below 5°C) for geyser steam.
  • Aspens peak late Sep to early Oct around Mammoth + northern range.
  • Elk rut: late September into October, audible bugling at dawn.
