Vietnam runs 1,600 km from the Chinese border down to the Mekong delta and packs five distinct photographic worlds along the way. The far north — Ha Giang and Sapa — hosts the country's most dramatic terraced rice valleys carved over centuries by Hmong, Dao, and Tay minorities. Ha Long Bay's 1,600 limestone karst islands rise from the Gulf of Tonkin like ink-wash paintings. Ninh Binh's inland karst (Trang An + Tam Coc) offers river-rowed equivalents of Ha Long. The ancient port of Hoi An is a UNESCO-protected city of yellow tube houses and silk lanterns that turn the riverfront magenta at dusk. The Mekong delta's floating markets + stilt-house villages anchor the south. Best window is October-April for the north, year-round for the south.
