The Albertine Rift hosts the world's entire mountain gorilla population — about 1,063 individuals split between Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest + Mgahinga, and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park (Dian Fossey's research home). Gorilla trekking permits are limited (8 per family per day, Rwanda), expensive ($800-1,500/person), and book out 6-12 months in advance. Photographers typically do 2-3 treks per trip + Mount Bisoke summit or Fossey Tomb hike.

Gear Essentials

Fast lens (f/2.8 or wider) — rainforest deep shade Mid telephoto (70-200mm) — gorillas come close Wide angle (24-35mm) for portraits with environment Weatherproof camera body + lens covers Lightweight quick-dry hiking clothes (earth tones) Waterproof boots + gaiters Walking stick (provided by park) Backup body recommended (humidity + falls)
Itinerary at a Glance

An 11-Day Gorilla + Volcanoes Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Kigali (KGL). Rwanda’s premium gateway. Kigali Genocide Memorial visit, then overnight — the city’s dining (Heaven Restaurant, Inzora Roof) is a soft landing before the forests.

Day 2 — Drive to Musanze / Volcanoes NP Kinigi HQ (2.5-3 hr). Tarmac the whole way. Check in near the park HQ — Bisate Lodge, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, or Mountain Gorilla View. Afternoon scouting of the Karisimbi-Sabyinyo volcano skyline.

Day 3 — Volcanoes NP gorilla trek. Pre-dawn briefing at Kinigi HQ, then trek 2-7 hours to a habituated family. Premium Rwanda permits ($1,500). Strict 1-hr-with-the-family rule — hire a porter ($15-20) so you arrive with steady hands. Bamboo + mountain-meadow aesthetic, dramatic volcano backdrops.

Day 4 — Mount Bisoke crater-lake summit. 6-hr round-trip from the same Kinigi trailheads to 3,711m — crater lake at the top, gorilla and golden-monkey habitat on the way up. Iconic mountain gorilla photography continues if you book a second trek instead.

Day 5 — Dian Fossey Tomb hike (Karisoke). 4-hr round-trip to 3,000m — Fossey’s grave site and the Karisoke research station ruins. The historical/emotional hike; read Gorillas in the Mist first.

Day 6 — Lake Kivu. 1.5-hr descent to Gisenyi/Rubavu lakeside for a mid-circuit rest day. Sunset photography of fishermen + dugout canoes on the methane-rich lake.

Day 7 — Cross to Uganda at Cyanika. Drive back through Musanze to the Cyanika border (~2.5 hr, ~30-min crossing; Gatuna serves the Kigali road instead) → Kisoro. Afternoon at Mgahinga Gorilla NP — golden monkey trekking, the Batwa heritage trail, and the Nyakagezi gorilla family. Quieter than Bwindi.

Day 8 — Bwindi Rushaga (southern sector). 1.5-2-hr drive from Kisoro. Uganda permits are $800 — or book Rushaga’s habituation experience ($1,500), the only 4-hr session offered anywhere and the serious photographer’s pick. Overnight Trackers Safari Lodge.

Day 9 — Bwindi Ruhija (eastern ridge). Road climbs along the forest edge to 2,300m. Trek Bitukura, Mukiza, or Oruzogo in mossy high-forest backdrops; the bird-rich ridge adds Albertine Rift endemics between treks.

Day 10 — Bwindi Buhoma (northern sector). The classic trailhead — Bwindi’s original gate. Easiest treks (1-3 hr) to Mubare, Habinyanja, or Rushegura families. Buhoma community walks in the afternoon. Overnight Bwindi Lodge / Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp.

Day 11 — Fly Kihihi → Entebbe (EBB) + depart. Short drive to Kihihi airstrip, Aerolink hop to Entebbe for the evening international flight.

Best done June-September (long dry season) or December-February (short dry season). May and November are wet but cheaper. Book gorilla permits 6-12 months ahead — both countries cap permit numbers strictly.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate to advanced. Gorilla treks are 1-8 hours through dense rainforest at altitude:

  • Bwindi Buhoma (Uganda): most accessible — 1-3 hr treks, lower altitude (~1,500m)
  • Bwindi Ruhija (Uganda): 4-6 hr treks at 2,300m
  • Volcanoes NP (Rwanda): 2-7 hr treks at 2,500-3,000m
  • Bisoke summit: 6 hr round-trip to 3,711m
