A 12-Day Switzerland Photography Arc
On the map above: every leg has a small [ icon ] chip at its midpoint — click to toggle between Car (real driving polyline from OSRM) and Train (real Swiss rail track from OSM, including the Glacier Express arc via Andermatt). Hover any marker label to lift it above the hillshade. Distances below assume train travel — most legs are faster than driving and let you shoot from the window.
Day 1 — Arrive Zurich (ZRH). Train to Lucerne (45 min). Stay Bürgenstock Resort or Hotel des Balances. Chapel Bridge at blue hour.
Day 2 — Lucerne + Mt Pilatus. Cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm (world’s steepest cog railway). Panorama over Lake Lucerne + central Alps.
Day 3 — Train to the Lauterbrunnen Valley (2 hrs via Interlaken Ost). Valley of 72 waterfalls. Stay Hotel Silberhorn or Hotel Schützen. Staubbach Falls + Trummelbach (inside-the-mountain falls).
Day 4 — Schilthorn (Piz Gloria). Cable car from Stechelberg via Mürren to 2,970m summit. 360° Eiger/Mönch/Jungfrau panorama + James Bond museum.
Day 5 — Jungfrau Region: Jungfraujoch ‘Top of Europe’. Train via Wengen + Kleine Scheidegg to 3,454m (highest railway station in Europe). Aletsch Glacier views. Plan a clear-weather day; otherwise wait.
Day 6 — Bachalpsee + First. Cable car from Grindelwald to First, hike 50 min to Bachalpsee for the Schreckhorn reflection (iconic Swiss shot).
Day 7 — Oeschinensee. Train Grindelwald → Kandersteg (90 min via Interlaken + Spiez), then the Oeschinen gondola and a 20-min walk into the lake bowl — turquoise water beneath 2,000m rock walls. Hike past the gondola station for the elevated panorama; glacial melt makes the colour most vivid Jun-Jul.
Day 8 — Train Kandersteg → Zermatt (2 hrs via the Lötschberg line + Visp). Switzerland’s car-free Matterhorn village. Stay Mont Cervin Palace or The Omnia. Sunset alpenglow on the Matterhorn from Riffelsee mirror lake (Gornergrat cog train + 30-min walk).
Day 9 — Gornergrat sunrise. Cog train at dawn to 3,089m for sunrise on the Matterhorn + 29 4,000m peaks visible. Best clear-morning shot in the Alps.
Day 10 — Glacier Express train Zermatt → St. Moritz (8 hrs). World’s slowest express train through the Alps. Panorama cars, dome glass. Overnight St. Moritz (Badrutt’s Palace) or Pontresina.
Day 11 — St. Moritz & Engadin. Muottas Muragl at sunset for the iconic Engadin lake-chain panorama. Val Roseg’s larch-lined valley walk — the larch forests turn gold mid-October.
Day 12 — Scenic Rail Lines: Albula + Bernina. Ride the UNESCO-listed Albula line from St. Moritz to Filisur — the hiking trail above the Landwasser Viaduct gives the iconic train-over-bridge shot. Continue on the UNESCO-listed Bernina Express toward Lugano (Italian Switzerland) if you have spare days; otherwise return to Zurich for departure.
Best photographer windows: late September through mid-October — autumn larch turning gold + first snow on high peaks + stable weather. Late June for wildflowers + summer alpine. February for ski-resort snow + clear-sky guarantees + snow-laden trees.
