Sundarbans
Bengal tigers swimming through the world's largest mangrove forest — Bangladesh + West Bengal India, only place tigers hunt by boat
When to Go
Drag across months to filter by season, conditions, and light
Tigers in Sundarbans are EXCEPTIONALLY elusive — even premium operators average 1 sighting per 4-5 day trip. The destination is more about the BIOME than guaranteed wildlife: tidal mangrove channels, golden hour over the delta, river dolphins surfacing, fishing villages, masked finfoots and Pallas's fish eagles. Photographers expecting Ranthambore/Bandhavgarh tiger close-ups will be disappointed; photographers who love the ATMOSPHERE of an ancient delta will love it.

Permits & Visa
Permit / fee required
Bangladesh: Sundarbans Forest Department permits issued via tour operator (~$50/day). India: Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve permit + armed forest guard mandatory (₹1,000-2,500). Photo permits for boat-based cameras free; commercial-use permits for film/video extra. Drones banned in both tiger reserves.
Duration
5-8 days (3-4 day boat + travel + Bagerhat side trip)
The Sundarbans is the world's largest mangrove forest (10,000 km² across Bangladesh and India's West Bengal), the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta where three of Asia's great rivers meet the Bay of Bengal. It's the only place on Earth where Bengal tigers swim — they cross tidal channels routinely, ambushing prey from the water. Of an estimated 100-120 tigers in Bangladesh's portion and 80-100 in India's, all are exceptionally elusive: most successful tiger sightings happen from boat decks at dawn, with the cat on a mudbank or swimming a creek. Beyond tigers, the forest holds saltwater crocodiles, spotted deer, rhesus macaques, masked finfoots, Pallas's fish eagles, 250+ bird species, and the Irrawaddy + Ganges river dolphins. The classic photographic trip is a 3-5 day live-aboard boat from either Khulna (Bangladesh) or Godkhali (India), winding through the tidal channels. Best window is November-February: cool dry weather, calm water, and tigers more active. Monsoon (Jun-Sep) closes most routes.
Gear Essentials
Itinerary at a Glance
A 7-Day Sundarbans Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Kolkata (CCU). Check into ITC Sonar or The Oberoi Grand. Evening at Howrah Bridge + Mullick Ghat flower market.
Day 2 — Drive Kolkata → Godkhali (3 hrs), boat to Sajnekhali. Board boat, transit through fishing villages to Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve watchtower. First night on boat near Bhagabatpur.
Day 3 — Sundarbans West (IN) full day. Dobanki canopy walk, Sudhanyakhali watchtower. Tiger Reserve core area boat patrol with armed forest guard — tiger-tracking from the deck as the cats cross mudbanks between channels. Saltwater crocodile sightings near Pirkhali. Sunset behind the Matla River.
Day 4 — Cross to Bangladesh (full transit day). Either return Kolkata for the flight to Dhaka + Jessore, OR use the Petrapole-Benapole land border to Jessore. Drive to the Pasur River jetty and board the Bangladesh live-aboard; overnight sail south through the tidal channels.
Day 5 — Hiron Point. Six to seven boat hours down the Pasur to the southernmost forest station, where mangrove meets the Bay of Bengal. Dawn in the tidal creeks from the boat hide, deer herds on the meadows, then sunset over the fishing fleets on the open horizon.
Day 6 — Sundarbans East (BD). Three to four boat hours east along the seaward edge to Kotka watchtower at dawn — best Bengal tiger sighting probability in BD. Spotted deer herds, crab fisher villages. Sailing north: Harbaria mangrove trail (boardwalk through Sundri tree forest) and Karamjal eco-tourism center.
Day 7 — Mongla → Bagerhat → Khulna → fly out. Morning light on Mongla port + Pasur River cargo ships, then road to Bagerhat (UNESCO) — 360 medieval mosques built by Khan Jahan Ali (15th-c). Sixty-Dome Mosque is the masterpiece. End in Khulna, fly Jessore → Dhaka → home.
Trip philosophy: come for the biome + light + atmosphere, not the guaranteed tiger close-up. The mangroves at golden hour are the photo. Tiger sightings are bonuses.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Moderate. Boat-based, low-altitude, but with humid heat + biting insects:
- Boat living: live-aboards have basic cabins (fan-cooled or AC depending on price tier). Shared bathrooms. Engines run intermittently overnight. Light sleepers struggle.
- Heat + humidity: Nov-Feb is the comfortable window (25-30°C days, 15-20°C nights). Mar-May rises to 35°C + 80% humidity.
- Mosquitoes + biting insects: aggressive. Cover skin + DEET essential.
- Watchtower walks: 1-2 hr boardwalks, armed forest guard accompanies in tiger reserve. Slip risk on wet planks.
- Cyclone risk: Sundarbans is in the Bay of Bengal cyclone belt. Oct-Nov + Apr-May are seasonal cyclone windows. Live-aboards monitor weather and may abort.
Health + Safety
- Tiger attack risk is real and historical: ~50-100 deaths of villagers per year in Bangladesh’s Sundarbans. Tourists are never alone — always with armed forest guard on land, always on boats in water. Risk to tourists effectively zero if you follow rules.
- Saltwater crocodiles: largest extant species, common in Sundarbans. Do not put hands in water from low boats.
- Malaria + dengue: present year-round, peaks monsoon. Anti-malarials + DEET + long sleeves.
- Vaccinations: Hep A/B, typhoid, rabies (boat travel near village dogs), Japanese encephalitis (rural Bangladesh).
- Drinking water: bottled only. Boats provide.
Cultural Etiquette
- Photographing fishing villages: ask first. Honey collectors (Mawalis) and fishermen (Mowals) are friendly but have superstitions about photographs being taken of them.
- Bonbibi shrines (forest deity who protects against tigers) are sacred — observe respectful distance, no flash.
- Bagerhat mosques: remove shoes, modest dress (long pants + covered shoulders), women bring headscarf. Photography fine.
- Tipping: 10% on tours + restaurants in cities; 50-100 BDT/INR per day to boat crew + forest guards.
Permits + Access
- Bangladesh visa: e-visa or visa-on-arrival (US/EU) at Dhaka or Chittagong airports.
- India visa: e-visa pre-arrival.
- Sundarbans permits included in tour packages. Solo travel into the reserve NOT POSSIBLE — must be with licensed operator + armed forest guard.
- Cross-border travel Petrapole-Benapole land border or via Kolkata-Dhaka flights. Don’t plan same-day border crossings during cyclone season.
- Drones banned in both Indian + Bangladesh Sundarbans tiger reserves.
