South Africa concentrates three distinct photographic stories into a single country at the bottom of Africa. Cape Town anchors the southwest with Table Mountain's flat-topped silhouette over the city, Cape Point's dramatic Atlantic-Indian confluence, and the Bo-Kaap's coloured Malay Quarter houses. The Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Constantia) sit 30 min inland. The Garden Route runs the southern coast through indigenous forest, ostrich farms, and Plettenberg whales. Drakensberg's basalt escarpment offers Africa's highest hiking south of the equator. Kruger National Park in the northeast delivers the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo) plus 500+ bird species across an area the size of Wales. May-October is the photographer's window — dry winter for safari, cool nights, low humidity.

Gear Essentials

Long telephoto (300-500mm) for Big Five at safe safari distance Wide angle (16-35mm) for Table Mountain panoramas + Drakensberg escarpment Mid-tele (70-200mm) for Bo-Kaap houses, vineyard rows, lighthouse details Polarizer for Atlantic blue saturation + sky over the Karoo Sturdy beanbag or window mount for safari vehicle stability Light hiking shoes for Table Mountain + Drakensberg trails Layered clothing — coastal Cape can swing 15°C in a day Anti-malarials for Kruger (consult doctor; risk seasonal Nov-May)
Itinerary at a Glance

Day 5 — Drive Cape Town → Hermanus (1.5 hr). Whale-watching boat tour (Jun-Nov peak) or shore-based whale-watching from Walker Bay cliffs. Continue to Gansbaai for great white shark cage diving (option).

Day 6 — Drive Hermanus → Knysna (5 hr Garden Route). Stop at Cape Agulhas (southernmost point of Africa) en route. Overnight Knysna.

Day 7 — Garden Route exploration. Tsitsikamma NP Storms River bridge + suspension footbridge. Plettenberg Bay beach + Robberg Peninsula. Knysna Heads at sunset.

Day 8 — Fly Port Elizabeth (PLZ) → Johannesburg → Drakensberg (5 hr drive). Cathedral Peak or Champagne Valley base. Sunset on the Amphitheatre buttress.

Day 9 — Drakensberg day hikes. Tugela Falls viewpoint (5th-tallest waterfall in the world). Cathedral Peak hike (full day). San rock art at Game Pass Shelter.

Day 12 — Kruger Big Five. 5am pre-dawn game drive. Mid-day siesta. Late afternoon drive + sundowner.

Day 13 — Kruger NP river loops. Dawn Big Five drive along the S-roads — the gravel loops tracing the Sabie and Olifants rivers (S21, S30, S100) carry Kruger NP’s densest lion + leopard traffic. Golden-light elephant herds at the waterholes mid-morning. Dusk drive for big cats on the move.

Day 14 — Kruger continues. Walking safari (camps offer 3-hr armed-guide bush walks). Night drive for nocturnal species (leopard, civet, porcupine).

Day 15 — Final morning game drive + fly Skukuza → Johannesburg → home.

Optimal timing is August-October — peak winter dry season aligns with whale peak, wildflower bloom, ideal safari (animals concentrate at shrinking waterholes), comfortable Cape weather.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate. Mix of vehicle + walking:

  • Table Mountain: cableway up + level summit walks. Hike up Platteklip Gorge (3 hr, strenuous) for serious hikers.
  • Cape Point: short walks from lighthouse parking.
  • Boulders Beach penguins: boardwalk + beach.
  • Garden Route: drive-based with optional Tsitsikamma + Knysna walks.
  • Drakensberg Tugela Falls: 4-7 hr return depending on route. Cathedral Peak is a 10-hr full-day hike with chain section.
  • Kruger safari: vehicle-based + optional walking safari (camps offer armed-guide 3-hr bush walks).

Climate Reversal

  • Cape Town (Mediterranean): hot dry summers (Dec-Feb, 25-32°C), wet winters (Jun-Aug, 12-18°C). Photographer’s prime: Feb-Apr + Oct-Nov.
  • Garden Route: rain year-round but mostly Apr-Jun. Mild temps 15-25°C.
  • Drakensberg: summer thunderstorms Nov-Feb, cold dry winters Apr-Aug (sub-zero nights at altitude).
  • Kruger (subtropical): dry winter May-Sep (12-25°C) is safari prime. Wet summer Oct-Apr (20-32°C) is lush + birding peak + malaria risk.

Wildlife Etiquette

  • Stay in vehicle at Kruger unless explicitly in a hide or at a camp
  • Distance from lions/leopards: never approach within 20m even by vehicle. Don’t lean out windows.
  • Ranger guidance overrides everything — they know the animals’ moods
  • No flash at night drives (disturbs nocturnal hunting)

Cultural Etiquette

  • Apartheid Museum + Soweto: respectful demeanour, ask before photographing residents
  • Township tours: best with local guide, contributes to community
  • Bo-Kaap: photography of houses fine, ask before portraits of residents

Safety + Practical

  • Tap water safe in major cities + camps
  • Johannesburg requires standard urban precautions, especially after dark in unfamiliar areas. Cape Town much safer in tourist zones.
  • Self-drive safe on highways. Drive on the left.
  • Malaria seasonal in Kruger Nov-May; consult doctor 4 weeks before travel.
  • Currency: rand has weakened over years — South Africa is excellent value for international visitors.
