Romania
Bran + Peleș castles, Transfăgărășan + Carpathian brown bears, painted Bucovina monasteries, Maramureș wooden churches
When to Go
Drag across months to filter by season, conditions, and light
Romania has four distinct photographic windows. Autumn (mid-Sep to late Oct) is the photographer's prime — Carpathian beech + oak in full color, bears active feeding before hibernation, fewer tourists, clear skies. Summer (Jun-Aug) is the only window for Transfăgărășan (snow-closed otherwise) + Făgăraș alpine hiking. Winter (Dec-Feb) gives snow castles + Christmas markets in Brașov + Sibiu. Spring (Apr-May) brings monastery feast days + Maramureș traditional spring rituals.

Duration
10-14 days for full Transylvania + Maramureș + Delta loop
Romania compresses Eastern Europe's most photographic subjects into a country the size of Oregon. The Carpathian Mountains arc through the center — Făgăraș peaks at 2,500m, the Transfăgărășan Highway's 27 hairpin turns climbing to Bâlea Lake, and Europe's largest brown-bear population (~6,000) in the forests around Brașov. South of the Carpathians, Bran Castle (the 'Dracula's castle' marketed to tourists) and Peleș Castle (Romania's royal residence — German neo-Renaissance in a forested valley) make the most-photographed castles in Eastern Europe. In Transylvania proper, Sighișoara's UNESCO-listed citadel (Vlad the Impaler's birthplace) preserves a 14th-century Saxon street grid. To the north, Maramureș holds Europe's tallest wooden churches (~70m spires) and a traditional rural culture that survived communism by being too remote. Bucovina's painted monasteries (Voroneț, Sucevița) cover exterior walls with 16th-century frescoes still vivid 450 years later. Closing the loop, the Danube Delta is Europe's largest wetland — pelicans, kingfishers, traditional Lipovan fishing villages.

Itinerary at a Glance
A 12-Day Romanian Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Bucharest (OTP). Palace of the Parliament (2nd largest building on Earth). Stay Hotel Cișmigiu or Athénée Palace.
Day 2 — Drive Bucharest → Brașov (3 hrs). Black Church + Council Square at sunset. Stay Casa Wagner or Bella Muzica.
Day 3 — Bran Castle + Peleș Castle. Bran Castle first — the touristy ‘Dracula’ castle, but its silhouette on the cliff at dusk is genuinely dramatic; arrive by 9am to beat the tour buses, or return for blue hour. Then Peleș Castle above Sinaia — Neo-Renaissance turrets rising against the Bucegi forest, photogenic from the forested approach road.
Day 4 — Brașov → Sighișoara (3 hrs). UNESCO citadel + Clock Tower view at golden hour. Stay Burg Hostel inside the walls.
Day 5 — Drive to Maramureș (5 hrs). The N route through Cluj-Napoca + Baia Mare. Stay near Sighetu Marmației.
Day 6 — Maramureș villages. Bârsana, Ieud, Poienile Izei — 8 UNESCO wooden churches with 50-70m spires. The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța (painted gravestones with humorous epitaphs), then haystack fields at dawn with mist over the Iza Valley.
Day 7 — Drive to Bucovina (3 hrs). Voroneț + Sucevița + Moldovița painted monasteries. 16th-c frescoes still vivid.
Day 8 — Drive to the Făgăraș Mountains (6 hrs). Crossing Transylvania via Bistrița + Sibiu. Romania’s highest range — the Transfăgărășan switchbacks seen from the Bâlea Lake cable car (running Jul-Oct) make the warm-up frame for tomorrow. Stay near Sibiu or Cârțișoara.
Day 9 — Transfăgărășan Highway. Drive the 27 hairpin turns to Bâlea Lake (2,034m). Sunrise on the lake; afternoon on the switchback descent. Open Jul-Sep ONLY.
Day 10 — Salina Turda + Cluj. Underground salt mine (theme park deep inside; otherworldly green-blue cathedral lighting). Stay Cluj-Napoca.
Day 11 — Drive to Danube Delta (8 hrs via Brașov or fly to Tulcea). Stay Delta Resort or Pelican Hotel.
Day 12 — Danube Delta boat day. Pelicans, herons, kingfishers, Lipovan fishing villages. Fly home from Tulcea or Bucharest.
Best photographer window: mid-September through mid-October. Carpathian autumn color + bear feeding + Transfăgărășan still open + Christmas-market crowds not yet arrived.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

- Tap water: safe in cities; bottled in rural areas.
- Cards widely accepted in cities; cash needed in rural Maramureș + monastery donations.
Cultural Etiquette
- Monasteries: covered shoulders + long skirts/pants. Women may be asked to wear headscarves at painted monasteries.
- Photo permits inside monasteries: typically 5-10 RON.
- Maramureș villages: traditional dress is everyday for elders, not costume — ask before photographing people. Tip 10-20 RON for posed portraits.
- Tipping: 10% restaurants, 5-10 RON taxis.
