Itinerary at a Glance
A 12-Day Québec & Atlantic Canada Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Quebec City (YQB). Old Town walking — Château Frontenac at blue hour from Terrasse Dufferin, Petit-Champlain cobblestone alleys, Place Royale. Stay Auberge Saint-Antoine or Hôtel Le Germain.
Day 2 — Quebec City + Île d’Orléans. Pre-dawn at Montmorency Falls (83m, taller than Niagara). Cross to Île d’Orléans for working farm landscapes — strawberry fields in summer, apple orchards Sep–Oct. Sunset back at the citadel walls.
Day 3 — Drive Quebec → Tadoussac via Charlevoix (3.5 hrs). Highway 138 along the north shore of the St. Lawrence. Stops at Baie-Saint-Paul artist village, Cap-à-l’Aigle lookouts, and the Charlevoix Crater rim. The Charlevoix lookouts over the St. Lawrence are a genuine aurora spot — on strong Kp nights the lights reflect off the river. Whale-watching boat from Tadoussac at sunset (Jun–Oct).
Day 4 — Tadoussac whales + drive to Gaspé (5 hrs). Morning Zodiac for belugas + fin whales at the Saguenay fjord mouth. Ferry to the south shore, drive east along the Gaspésie coast. Overnight Sainte-Anne-des-Monts.
Day 5 — Gaspésie National Park + Forillon. Mont-Albert sunrise hike (caribou occasionally visible at 1,154m). Drive east through Chic-Choc mountains. Sunset at Cap-Bon-Ami cliffs in Forillon National Park.
Day 6 — Percé Rock + Bonaventure Island. Boat tour around Percé Rock (471m limestone arch) and Bonaventure Island northern gannet colony — 50,000+ nesting pairs, the largest accessible gannetry in North America. May–Oct only. Evening return up the coast to Forillon NP where the Appalachians dive into the Gulf — scan for whales off Cap-Gaspé from the headland.
Day 7 — Drive to Cape Breton (8 hrs / overnight Moncton). Long transit day. Cross into New Brunswick, Confederation Bridge to PEI optional, or push to Nova Scotia. Overnight Baddeck for early Cabot Trail start.
Day 8 — Cabot Trail clockwise. 298km loop through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Skyline Trail boardwalk at sunset (whales visible from 400m cliff edge). Peak foliage Oct 5–15 — early October for the Acadian forest’s red maple + birch + spruce mix.
Day 9 — Drive Cape Breton → Peggy’s Cove (5 hrs). Stops at Mahone Bay’s three churches and Lunenburg UNESCO old-town. Peggy’s Cove lighthouse at golden hour — pink granite shore, working fishing village. Sunrise next day for the iconic shot without crowds.
Day 10 — PEI via Confederation Bridge (3 hrs). 12.9 km bridge crossing. Cavendish red-sand beaches, Green Gables heritage site, lupins along the highway (peak Jun 20–Jul 10). PEI’s red cliff lighthouses at golden hour — Covehead and Cape Tryon are the standouts. Overnight Charlottetown.
Day 11 — Bay of Fundy. Drive to Hopewell Rocks (3 hrs from PEI). Check tide tables — 6-hour window walks on the ocean floor twice daily, then 12m tide returns. Long-exposure milky-water from the lookout at high tide. Overnight Moncton.
Day 12 — Departure from Moncton (YQM) or Halifax (YHZ, 3-hr drive).
Best photographer window: Oct 5–15 for Cabot Trail peak foliage. Late Jan–Feb for the Québec Winter Carnival ice palace + Old Quebec snow scenes. Jun–Jul for lupins, whales, gannets at Bonaventure, and the longest daylight. Avoid late-November through early-January — short days, many tourism services closed.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Easy to moderate. Mostly car-based with optional hikes:
- Old Quebec cobblestones: walkable, but Upper Town is on a 100m cliff — funicular available if you don’t want the steep streets.
- Cabot Trail Skyline boardwalk: 7 km out-and-back, easy boardwalk, 1.5 hr return — moderate exposure on the descending cliff section.
- Mont-Albert: full-day 17 km loop, 1,150m elevation gain. Strenuous. Caribou herd at the plateau (last Gaspésie population, monitor closures).
- Hopewell Rocks ocean floor walk: easy 1 km on wet sand at low tide — slippery rocks, MUST exit before tide returns (rangers enforce).
- Bonaventure Island puffin trails: 3 km round-trip on flat trail to the gannet colony.
Weather
- Summer (Jun–Aug): 18–25°C, occasional thunder-storms, blackflies in interior June.
- Fall (Sep–Oct): 10–18°C, photographer’s prime — stable air, peak color first 2 weeks of October.
- Winter (Dec–Mar): −15 to −5°C in Quebec, milder −5 to 2°C on Atlantic coast. Quebec Winter Carnival late Jan–mid Feb. Snow scenes everywhere.
- Spring (Apr–May): shoulder season, mud-season in interior, ice cracking on the St. Lawrence — moody but limited subjects.
Wildlife
- Whales (Tadoussac, Forillon, Bay of Fundy) — beluga, minke, fin, humpback. Peak Jul–Sep.
- Northern gannets (Bonaventure Island) — 50,000 breeding pairs Apr–Oct.
- Atlantic puffins (Cap Saint-Mary, NS / Witless Bay, NL — side trip) — Jun–Aug.
- Moose (Cape Breton Highlands NP) — Skyline Trail is a reliable sightings spot at dawn/dusk.
- Caribou (Gaspésie last herd) — rare, threatened.
Permits
- Parks Canada Discovery Pass: $75 CAD annual covers all national parks (Forillon, Cabot Trail, PEI, Fundy). Worth it for any 3+ park trip.
- Hopewell Rocks: $14 CAD adult, separate entry.
- Drone restrictions: prohibited in all Parks Canada properties. Quebec Old Town has municipal no-fly zones. Operators must register with Transport Canada.
