April–May for poppies + spring color in the Luberon. Avoid August (French vacation, crowded + hot + lavender harvested).

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Beginner. Easy walking + driving:

  • Lavender fields: walk along the edge (don’t trample). Sénanque abbey is fenced — photograph from public roadway above.
  • Roussillon Sentier des Ocres: 1 km gentle loop on iron-oxide trail (stains shoes red).
  • Hilltop villages (Gordes, Bonnieux, Les Baux): uneven cobblestone + stairs.
  • Calanques de Cassis: easy 30-min walk to overlook, or boat tour from Cassis harbor.
  • Camargue: drive-around with multiple pull-outs. Horseback rides available.

Weather + Light

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): 25–35°C, sun-drenched, occasional thunderstorms. Mistral wind (50–100 km/h) clears the air but knocks tripods. Lavender peak ~Jun 20 to Jul 20.
  • Fall (Sep–Oct): 15–25°C, harvest season, warm tones in vineyards + olive groves.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): 5–14°C, occasional snow on Mont Ventoux + Luberon peaks. Quiet villages, moody light.
  • Spring (Mar–May): 10–20°C, poppies + spring wildflowers, almond + cherry blossoms.

Wildlife

  • Camargue horses + black bulls: year-round, free-roaming.
  • Pink flamingos (Camargue, Étang de Vaccarès): peak Apr–Sep, ~30,000 breeding pairs.
  • Cicadas (Provençal summer soundtrack): Jul–Aug.

Permits + Cultural

  • Pont du Gard: €9.50 entry, parking included.
  • Sénanque Abbey: working monastery — photograph lavender field freely from outside, no entry to inner buildings without prior arrangement.
  • Lavender fields: privately owned. Stay on public verges + roadside paths. Don’t walk between rows (damages harvest).
  • Drones: banned over villages, abbey, Camargue NP, and most lavender fields.
