Southern Peru holds the highest density of pre-Columbian photographic subjects on the planet. Machu Picchu is the headline, but the corridor from Cusco through the Sacred Valley to Lake Titicaca packs Inca terraces (Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Maras-Moray), the painted slopes of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca, 5,200m), the world's deepest condor-watching canyon (Colca), and the floating Uros reed islands on the world's highest navigable lake. Cusco itself is a UNESCO city of red-tile rooftops, baroque cathedrals built atop Inca stone foundations, and the densest Quechua-speaking population in the country. Dry season is May through October — peak photography window.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate to strenuous. Altitude is the main challenge:

  • Cusco (3,400m): most visitors feel mild altitude effects (headache, shortness of breath). Acclimatise 1-2 days before strenuous activity.
  • Sacred Valley (2,800m): 600m lower than Cusco — easier on the lungs.
  • Machu Picchu (2,430m): lower again. Walk the terraces freely.
  • Huayna Picchu summit (2,720m): 1 hr steep climb, fixed-cable sections. Permit required (only 200/day in 2 time slots).
  • Rainbow Mountain (5,200m): 3 hr hike from 4,600m trailhead. Strenuous. Severe altitude exposure — many visitors turn back.
  • Colca Canyon (3,400m rim): viewing only is easy. Sangalle Oasis hike is 12 km return, 1,200m descent + ascent, very strenuous.
  • Lake Titicaca (3,800m): highest base. Cold + windy.

Altitude Sickness

  • Headache, nausea, fatigue, sleeplessness in first 24-48 hours
  • Diamox / acetazolamide (consult doctor) reduces symptoms — start 1 day before ascent
  • Coca tea + chewing coca leaves (Cusco standard) helps mildly
  • Hydrate aggressively (3-4 L/day), no alcohol, light meals
  • Descend if symptoms worsen — go to Sacred Valley (2,800m) for 1-2 days
  • Oxygen available at most hotels in Cusco

Climate by Season

  • May-Sep (dry): 18-22°C days, -2 to 5°C nights at altitude. Clear skies.
  • Oct-Apr (wet): warmer days (20-24°C), warmer nights (5-10°C). Daily afternoon rain. Landslides possible. February: Inca Trail closed.
  • UV at altitude: extreme. Sun hat + UPF 50 sunscreen + sunglasses.

Permits + Access

  • Machu Picchu entry: book 2-3 months ahead for peak season + early morning slots
  • Inca Trail: book 6+ months ahead; closed all February
  • Huayna Picchu / Machu Picchu Mountain hike: separate permit tied to MP entry, very limited
  • Rainbow Mountain: $30 entry, no advance booking needed

Photography Etiquette

  • Ask before portrait shots in Quechua and Aymara communities

  • Drones banned at Machu Picchu and most archaeological sites
