Itinerary at a Glance
A 8-Day Pantanal Jaguar Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Cuiabá (CGB). Connecting flight from São Paulo (GRU) on LATAM/GOL. Overnight Cuiabá to recover.
Day 2 — Chapada dos Guimarães NP. Half-day at the cerrado waterfalls + sandstone cliffs above Cuiabá — the park’s red sandstone cliffs and the Véu de Noiva falls hang right above the wetland. Sunset back in town, dinner local Mato Grosso cuisine.
Day 3 — Drive south on the Transpantaneira via Poconé. Cross into the Pantanal at Poconé (km 0 of the Transpantaneira). Wildlife begins immediately — capybaras, caimans, jabiru storks. Overnight Pousada Pouso Alegre (mid-Transpantaneira).
Day 4 — Pouso Alegre + Piuval lodge area. Morning birding (650+ Pantanal species). Hyacinth macaws and tamandua anteaters around the ranches. Move south to Pousada Piuval for the night.
Day 5 — Drive south to Porto Jofre. 5-hour drive (147 km dirt road, 122 wooden bridges). Howler monkeys, anteaters, capybara families along the way. Check in at Hotel Porto Jofre or floating river hotel.
Day 6 — Three Brothers River boat day. Full-day boat session on the Three Brothers River — the densest jaguar territory on earth, stalked boat-based at water level. 95%+ jaguar sighting rate in dry season. Plan 4-5 encounters across an 8-hour session.
Day 7 — Encontro das Águas State Park. All-day in the state park — highest jaguar density on Earth. Multi-jaguar territories overlap. Giant otter pods on river banks.
Day 8 — Return to Cuiabá + departure. Drive back up the Transpantaneira. Overnight Cuiabá, fly out next morning.
Best done July through October (dry season peak). May–Jun are the photography sweet spot — dry plus less crowded. Jan–April Pantanal is flooded and the Transpantaneira impassable.
