Newfoundland is Canada's most dramatic Atlantic province — icebergs drift past towering sea-cliffs in June, Atlantic puffins nest by the thousands at Cape St. Mary's, and the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows adds 1,000-year-old historical depth to a wild coastal landscape.

Itinerary at a Glance

A 12-Day Newfoundland Photography Arc

Day 1 — Arrive St. John’s (YYT). Pick up 4WD. Sunset at Signal Hill above the harbor. Stay downtown — Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland or Murray Premises Hotel.

Day 2 — Cape Spear + Quidi Vidi. Pre-dawn at Cape Spear — easternmost point in North America, first place to see sunrise on the continent. Old lighthouse (1836, oldest surviving). Mid-day at Quidi Vidi Village — fishing stages and brewery shacks crowded around the narrow harbor gut — then Jellybean Row colored houses in downtown St. John’s.

Day 3 — Witless Bay puffin tour. Boat from Bay Bulls (40 min from St. John’s) for the largest Atlantic puffin colony in North America (300,000+ breeding pairs). May–Aug season. Whales (humpback + minke) common Jun–Sep.

Day 4 — Drive to Bonavista (4 hr). Cape Bonavista Lighthouse + puffins from shore (best land-based puffin viewing in NL). Dungeon Provincial Park sea-collapse cave. Stay Bonavista town.

Day 5 — Drive to Twillingate (5 hr). Iceberg Alley peak Jun–early Jul — work the Twillingate Iceberg Viewpoints along the headlands while bergs drift past. Whale-watching boat tour from Twillingate harbor. Sleepy Cove + Long Point Lighthouse at sunset. Stay Anchor Inn.

Day 6 — Twillingate icebergs + drive west (6 hr to Rocky Harbour). Morning boat tour for icebergs (when present). Long drive across the Trans-Canada Highway to Gros Morne base.

Day 7 — Gros Morne Tablelands. Geologically famous — Earth’s mantle exposed by tectonic uplift, the rust-orange mantle rock looking like Mars. Trout River Pond at sunset. Stay Rocky Harbour or Norris Point.

Day 8 — Western Brook Pond. 3 km flat walk to the boat dock, then 2 hr boat tour of the inland fjord (technically a freshwater lake — 600 m cliffs, no outlet to ocean). Operates May–Oct.

Day 9 — Gros Morne Mountain hike OR coastal drive. Gros Morne Mountain summit hike (16 km / 800 m, strenuous, full day, only Jul–Oct when snow clears). Otherwise drive the northern peninsula coast — Bonne Bay, Cow Head, Arches Provincial Park.

Day 10 — Drive to L’Anse aux Meadows (4 hr north). UNESCO Viking settlement (1000 AD), only confirmed Norse site in North America. Sunset on Cape Onion + Quirpon.

Day 11 — Long range mountains drive back south. Long transit. Optional Port au Choix archaeological site. Stay Deer Lake or Corner Brook.

Day 12 — Fly home from Deer Lake (YDF) or drive back to St. John’s (8+ hr).

Best photographer window: mid-June to early July for iceberg alley + puffin breeding + whale arrival + long daylight (~17 hrs). Late August to mid-September for warm color, calm seas, fewer crowds. Aurora mid-Sep to mid-Apr for the rare clear night. Avoid Nov–Apr — limited ferries, businesses closed, dark days.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate. Hiking-heavy if you do the Gros Morne summit:

  • Cape Spear: drive-up + 100m walk.
  • Witless Bay boat: 2 hr smooth tour from harbor.
  • Western Brook Pond access: 3 km flat walk (plus 2 hr boat).
  • Tablelands trails: easy 4 km loop OR longer summit hike (10 km / 600 m strenuous).
  • Gros Morne Mountain: 16 km / 800 m, scree + boulder field at top. Requires above-freeze weather (Jul–Sep). Closed May–Jun for arctic-alpine flora protection.
  • Iceberg viewing: boat tour from Twillingate or land viewing at Cape Bonavista (free + weather-permitting).

Weather + Light

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): 10–22°C, foggy mornings common, long daylight. Iceberg alley + whale + puffin peak.
  • Fall (Sep): 5–15°C, color change late Sep, calm seas.
  • Winter (Nov–Mar): −15 to −5°C, snow, limited services, ferry schedules cut back.
  • Spring (Apr–May): cold, late ice, mud season.
  • Fog: maritime fog rolls in fast on the Avalon Peninsula — can shut down for days. Photographers should embrace it (moody mornings).

Wildlife

  • Icebergs: May–early July, drifting south from Greenland glaciers — track at icebergfinder.com.
  • Atlantic puffins: May–Aug at Witless Bay + Cape Bonavista.
  • Humpback + minke + fin whales: Jun–Sep feeding on capelin runs.
  • Caribou (Avalon herd): year-round.
