7-10 days for full New England circuit, 3-4 days for Vermont or Maine alone

New England's autumn foliage is one of North America's great natural spectacles — weeks of sugar maples, birches, and oaks igniting in red, orange, and gold from Maine's Acadia coast down through Connecticut's covered bridges. A self-drive circuit captures the full palette.

Itinerary at a Glance

A 10-Day New England Fall Foliage Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Boston (BOS). Pick up car. Drive 3 hr north to Stowe, Vermont. Stay Trapp Family Lodge or Topnotch Resort.

Day 2 — Stowe + Smugglers’ Notch. Pre-dawn at Stowe Pinnacle for the Mansfield range backdrop. Drive Smugglers’ Notch (Route 108) through the boulder-walled pass — vertical rock walls + sugar maple corridors at their best in peak foliage. Sunset at Moss Glen Falls.

Day 3 — Vermont covered bridges + drive to NH (2 hr). Country roads through Waitsfield + Warren. Cross into New Hampshire near Lake Winnipesaukee. Sunset somewhere along the Kanc. Stay Lincoln, NH.

Day 4 — Kancamagus Highway. 56 km scenic byway through the White Mountains — Sabbaday Falls, Rocky Gorge, Lower Falls. Best photography is early light + soft fog. Stay another night Lincoln.

Day 5 — Mt. Washington + Conway. Reach the Mount Washington Summit via the Auto Road or Cog Railway — highest peak in the Northeast, with a rime-iced observatory on top. Drive Mt. Washington Auto Road (open mid-May to Oct, weather-permitting). ‘Worst weather in the world’ on the summit at 6,288 ft. Drive south to North Conway.

Day 6 — Drive NH → Acadia, ME (5 hr). Long transit. Stop in Portland for lobster + Portland Head Light at sunset. Arrive Bar Harbor. Stay Bar Harbor Inn or Asticou Inn.

Day 7 — Acadia. Pre-dawn at Cadillac Mountain (first place to see sunrise in continental US Oct–Mar). Park Loop Road clockwise — Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, Jordan Pond.

Day 8 — Acadia: Bass Harbor + lobster towns. Pre-dawn at Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse (the iconic Maine shot). Mid-day at Schoodic Peninsula (less-crowded Acadia). Sunset at Otter Cliffs or Boulder Beach.

Day 9 — Drive south to Cape Cod (6 hr). Long transit south through coastal Maine. Stop at Nubble Light (York). Continue to Cape Cod. Stay Chatham Bars Inn or Wequassett.

Day 10 — Cape Cod National Seashore + back to Boston (2 hr). Marconi Beach, Race Point at sunset for the iconic Cape light. With an extra day, swing west along the Mohawk Trail — the hairpin overlook above the Deerfield Valley is the classic western-Massachusetts foliage frame. Fly out from BOS.

Best photographer window: Sep 25 to Oct 15 for peak fall color — north (Vermont/NH/Maine) early in window, south (Cape Cod, Mass) later. Late June for lupines + long daylight. Avoid mid-July to mid-August (humid, hazy). Winter (Dec–Feb) for snowy lighthouses + iced waterfalls.
