Itinerary at a Glance
A 20-Day Nepal Photography Arc (Everest + Annapurna + Chitwan)
Day 1 — Arrive Kathmandu (KTM). Stay Dwarika’s or Hyatt Regency. Acclimatize. Sunset at Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) stupa.
Day 2 — Kathmandu Valley UNESCO sites. Pashupatinath (Hindu funeral ghats — observe respectfully from across the river). Boudhanath Stupa at golden hour — the largest spherical stupa in Nepal, prayer-flag wheels at dusk.
Day 3 — Bhaktapur day trip. Drive 1 hr to Bhaktapur — medieval Newari town, Durbar Square (partially destroyed in 2015 earthquake, mostly rebuilt). Potters’ Square at dawn for clay-throwing. Bhaktapur is the most photogenic of the three royal-court cities.
Day 4 — Fly KTM → Lukla (35 min). Lukla is the famous ‘world’s most dangerous airport’ — sloped 527 m runway. Trek to Phakding (3–4 hr).
Day 5 — Phakding → Namche Bazaar (6 hr / +600 m). Cross suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. Namche is the Sherpa capital at 3,440 m. Acclimatize.
Day 6 — Acclimatization day Namche. Hike up to Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for first proper Everest sighting. Sherpa Culture Museum.
Day 7 — Trek Namche → Tengboche (5 hr / +360 m). Tengboche Monastery at 3,867 m — the iconic frame with Ama Dablam (6,812 m) behind. Buddhist monks chanting at dawn.
Day 8 — Trek Tengboche → Dingboche (5 hr / +550 m). Climb above the tree line into the high-altitude alpine zone. Dingboche at 4,410 m. Acclimatization day if symptoms.
Day 9 — Trek to Lobuche (4 hr / +500 m) + Kala Patthar. Trek to Lobuche, then optional afternoon climb of Kala Patthar (5,545 m) for the best ground-level Everest photo (no EBC slog, just the view). Most photographers prefer Kala Patthar to EBC itself.
Day 10 — Trek down + fly Lukla → Kathmandu. Full day descent to Phakding then Lukla. Weather-delays at Lukla are common (build buffer days).
Day 11 — Fly KTM → Pokhara (25 min). Sunset at Phewa Lake Pokhara with Machapuchare (‘Fishtail Mountain’) reflection — return at dawn, when dead-calm water mirrors the whole Annapurna wall; hire a rowboat for the cleanest angle. Stay Temple Tree Resort or Fish Tail Lodge.
Day 12 — Sarangkot sunrise → drive to Nayapul. Pre-dawn at Sarangkot for the Annapurna range first-light panorama. Drive 1.5 hr to Nayapul (the Poon Hill trek trailhead). Trek up to Tikhedhunga or Ulleri (4–5 hr).
Day 13 — Trek Ulleri → Ghorepani (5–6 hr). Up the famous 3,200 stone steps. Rhododendron forest (peak bloom March–April — entire mountainsides red + pink). Stay teahouse in Ghorepani.
Day 14 — Poon Hill sunrise viewpoint (4:30am). 1-hr climb to 3,210 m for the iconic Dhaulagiri + Annapurna dawn panorama. 360° view of 8 of Nepal’s 14 peaks above 8,000 m visible. Descend to Tadapani.
Day 15 — Trek Tadapani → Ghandruk → Chhomrong. Hillside Gurung village + classic Annapurna terraced-field shots in Ghandruk, then contour around to Chhomrong — gateway to the upper Modi Khola valley.
Day 16 — Trek Chhomrong → Himalaya Hotel (6–7 hr). Down the 2,500 stone steps, then up the narrowing bamboo + rhododendron gorge of the Modi Khola.
Day 17 — Himalaya Hotel → Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). Through Machapuchare Base Camp into the 360° glacial amphitheatre. Overnight at ABC — alpenglow on Annapurna I at dusk, the full sanctuary at sunrise.
Day 18 — Descend to Siwai + drive to Pokhara (3 hr). Long downhill back through Chhomrong; jeep from Siwai to lakeside Pokhara.
Day 19 — Drive Pokhara → Chitwan National Park (4–5 hr). Drop from the foothills to the Terai lowlands (or fly to Bharatpur from Kathmandu). Dusk on the Rapti riverbank — silhouetted dugout canoes + bathing elephants.
Day 20 — Chitwan dawn safari + return. Misty-river dawn by dugout canoe for rhino, gharial + mugger crocodiles at eye level, then jeep safari for one-horned rhino + (with luck) rare Bengal tigers — Oct–Apr dry season is best. Afternoon drive (5 hr) or 30-min Bharatpur flight back to Kathmandu for departure.
Best photographer window: mid-October to late November for clearest mountain views + stable weather + warm autumn light. Late March to early May for rhododendron blooms in lower elevations. Avoid mid-Jun to mid-Sep (monsoon — clouds + leeches). Winter Dec–Feb is cold + clear at altitude but teahouses sparse.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Moderate to expert for treks. Kathmandu Valley is easy:
- Kathmandu Valley UNESCO sites: drive + walk, easy.
- Sarangkot sunrise: drive-up + 50 m walk.
- Poon Hill trek: 5 days, max altitude 3,210 m, moderate. Good first Himalayan trek.
- Everest Base Camp / Kala Patthar: 12–14 days, max altitude 5,545 m (Kala Patthar), strenuous, altitude sickness risk.
- Acclimatization: gain no more than 500 m of sleeping altitude per day above 3,000 m. Diamox (acetazolamide) recommended above 4,000 m.
Weather + Visibility
- Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov): prime — clear atmosphere, stable, 5–20°C valleys, −10–0°C at high altitude. The clearest mountain views of the year.
- Pre-monsoon (Mar–May): rhododendron bloom, warmer, haze increasing toward May.
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep): 80%% of annual rainfall, leeches on trails, mountains hidden in cloud. Skip.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): cold + dry, fewer trekkers, snow blocks some passes.
Wildlife (Chitwan extension)
- One-horned rhino (~700 in Chitwan): year-round, dawn jeep + canoe safaris.
- Bengal tigers: rare sightings, 100+ in park.
- Wild Asian elephants: occasional.
- Gharial + mugger crocodiles: along the Rapti + Narayani rivers.
Permits + Safety
- Visa: 15/30/90 days on arrival, $30/$50/$125 USD.
- TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) required for trekking permits — get in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
- ACAP / SNP entry: separate park permits (Annapurna + Sagarmatha).
- Drones: technically banned without CAAN permit. Strict at Pashupatinath, monasteries, all national parks.
- Altitude sickness: serious risk above 3,500 m. Don’t push through symptoms (headache + nausea + insomnia + ataxia). Descend if needed.
- Insurance with helicopter evacuation is mandatory for high-altitude treks.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics
