Itinerary at a Glance
A 13-Day Morocco Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Casablanca (CMN) or Marrakech (RAK). Stay La Sultana Marrakech or Royal Mansour. Sunset at Café Atay rooftop overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa square.
Day 2 — Marrakech medina. Souks (Berber + spice + leather), Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, Jardin Majorelle (YSL’s restored garden). Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk for the food-stall + storyteller chaos.
Day 3 — High Atlas Berber villages. Drive into the Imlil valley (90 min) for walks between mud-brick villages stacked under Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Terraced barley fields + walnut groves glow in late light; Aït Bouguemez is the quieter multi-day alternative. Stay Kasbah du Toubkal or Douar Samra.
Day 4 — Drive to Aït Benhaddou (4 hrs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass). UNESCO-listed kasbah, Gladiator + Game of Thrones filming location. Stay Riad Caravane or Auberge Café-Restaurant Aït Benhaddou. Sunset on the kasbah.
Day 5 — Ouarzazate + Tighremt n’Ait Atta + drive to Dadès. Atlas Studios (where Lawrence of Arabia etc. were shot). Rose Valley (peak bloom early May). Stay Xaluca Dadès.
Day 6 — Dadès + Todra Gorge. Dadès snake-road switchbacks viewpoint. Todra Gorge red walls (160m high). Continue to Merzouga.
Day 7 — Erg Chebbi dunes sunset. 150m-tall Sahara dunes. Camel trek into the dunes for the Berber tent camp overnight. Stay Erg Chebbi Luxury Desert Camp.
Day 8 — Sahara sunrise + the long drive north. Best dune photography is sunrise — climb to a high ridge before 5am. Drive Merzouga → Fès (10 hrs OR fly via Errachidia).
Day 9 — Fes el-Bali. UNESCO-listed medieval Islamic walled city — the world’s largest car-free medina. Chouara Tannery (the iconic leather-dye pits — viewed from the leather-shop rooftop terraces, best at golden hour), Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Attarine Madrasa, Blue Gate (Bab Boujeloud). Stay Riad Fès or Palais Amani.
Day 10 — Drive Fès → Chefchaouen (4 hrs). The ‘blue city’ in the Rif Mountains. Every door + wall painted indigo blue. Stay Lina Ryad & Spa.
Day 11 — Chefchaouen morning + drive to Tangier or Rabat. Early morning before tour buses for the empty blue streets.
Day 12 — Essaouira (Atlantic coast). Fishing village + 18th-c ramparts (Game of Thrones’ Astapor). Argan oil cooperatives. Stay Heure Bleue Palais.
Day 13 — Drive Essaouira → Marrakech (3 hrs) → fly home.
Best photographer windows: March-May for wildflowers + Rose Valley + mild temperatures. October-November for harvest + still-warm dunes + fewer tourists. Avoid June-August (Marrakech +45°C, Sahara dunes lethal mid-day). Ramadan dates (varies, Mar-Apr 2026): restaurants close during fast hours; evenings are extra vibrant.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Easy to moderate. Mostly driving + walking in medinas:
- Medina walks: 4-6 hrs days. Cobblestones, uneven. Comfortable shoes.
- Erg Chebbi camel trek + dune walks: hours on a camel can be brutal on hips. Walk the last dune ridge by foot — soft sand is exhausting.
- Atlas Mountains hikes: optional. Toubkal (4,167m, 2-day climb) is N Africa’s highest.
- Todra Gorge walk: 2-hr flat walk between cliffs.
- Dadès snake road: drive only (no walking advised).
Health + Safety
- Heat: June-August 45°C+ in Marrakech + Sahara. Dangerous mid-day. Shoot dawn/dusk only.
- Stomach upsets: common. Bottled water + peeled fruit. Avoid ice in budget restaurants.
- Pickpockets in Marrakech medina. Crossbody bag for camera, not backpack.
- Scammers: ‘guides’ grabbing you in medina + demanding money. Firm ‘la, shukran’ (no, thanks) + walk on.
- Driving: roads variable, signage in Arabic/French/Berber. Private driver often easier (~$100-150/day).
- Tap water: NOT drinkable. Bottled only.
Cultural Etiquette
- Modest dress: cover shoulders + knees in medinas + mosques. Most mosques BANNED to non-Muslims except Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.
- Ramadan: respect fasting hours (sunrise to sunset). Restaurants for tourists stay open; discrete eating/drinking in public during day.
- Photographing people: ALWAYS ask. Tip 10-20 MAD ($1-2) per posed portrait. Women generally decline; respect.
- Tannery photography (Fès): rooftop terraces charge 50-100 MAD entry. Don’t pay ‘free tour’ guides who lead you to overpriced shops.
- Bargaining is expected: start at 30-40% of the asked price. Walk away to test the floor.
- Drones: BANNED in Morocco without prior government permit (rarely granted).
Permits + Access
- Visa-free 90 days for US/UK/EU/CA/AU.
- Medina parking: outside the walls only — cars cannot enter medinas. Use authorized lots.
- Aït Benhaddou + Volubilis + Saadian Tombs: 30-80 MAD each.
- Atlas Studios: 80 MAD.
- Camel trek into Erg Chebbi: 800-2,500 MAD per person depending on luxury level.
