Itinerary at a Glance
A 14-Day Mongolia Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Ulaanbaatar (UBN). Transfer to Shangri-La or Blue Sky Tower. Sukhbaatar Square + Gandantegchinlen Monastery in afternoon. Sunset at Zaisan Memorial overlook of the city.
Day 2 — Drive to Terelj National Park (2 hr from UB). Gorkhi-Terelj National Park — granite outcrops, alpine meadows, Mongol culture easily accessible from the capital.
Day 3 — Terelj horseback + Turtle Rock. Half-day horseback ride through the steppe (the way Mongolians actually travel). Turtle Rock formation + Aryabal Meditation Temple. Sunset at the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue (40 km from UB, world’s largest equestrian statue, 40 m tall). Return to UB for the night.
Day 4 — Fly UBN → Dalanzadgad (DLZ, 1.5 hr) for the South Gobi. Drive to Khongoryn Els ‘Singing Dunes’ (4 hr). Stay Gobi Three Camel Lodge or ger camp.
Day 5 — Khongoryn Els sunrise + camel riding. Pre-dawn climb of the highest dune (300 m, 30 km long). Bactrian camel rides + nomad family visit afternoon. Sunset back on the dunes.
Day 6 — Yolyn Am ‘Vulture Valley’. Drive 3 hr to the Yol Valley in Gurvansaikhan NP — ice gorge (persists Jul–Aug) with vultures + ibex. Walk 4 km into the canyon. Steppe-eagle photography.
Day 7 — Bayanzag ‘Flaming Cliffs’. Drive 4 hr north. Roy Chapman Andrews’ 1922 dinosaur-egg discovery site, red-rock badlands at sunset. Saxaul forest. Stay ger camp.
Day 8 — Fly DLZ → UBN, connect UBN → Ölgii (ULG, 3 hr). Western Mongolia, Kazakh ethnic region. Scout the Eagle Festival ground on the edge of town — in early October the Golden Eagle Festival fills it with Kazakh berkutchi (eagle hunters) competing on horseback against the snow-dusted Altai. Stay in traditional ger camp.
Day 9 — Eagle hunters (Sep–Mar only). Visit a Kazakh eagle hunter family for portraits + golden eagle in flight. Festival usually first weekend of October at Ölgii — book accommodation 6+ months ahead.
Day 10 — Drive 4 hr into Altai Tavan Bogd National Park: Khoton Lake. Shoot from the western viewpoint as the lake reflects the five sacred peaks (highest is Khüiten Uul, 4,374 m); golden larches line the shores in late September. Glacier views. Hike to Potanin Glacier viewpoint (3 km moderate).
Day 11 — Fly Ölgii → UBN, connect UBN → Mörön (north Mongolia). Drive 4 hr to Lake Khüvsgül’s northern shore. Stay Toilogt or Ashihai ger camps on the lake.
Day 12 — Lake Khüvsgül. ‘Blue Pearl of Mongolia’ — 2nd largest by volume in Asia, holds 1%% of world’s fresh water. Tsaatan (reindeer-herding) culture in the surrounding taiga (deeper north, multi-day expedition for serious visit). Boat tour + horse riding.
Day 13 — Return UBN. Drive back 2 hr to airport + fly to UBN. Final UB evening.
Day 14 — Depart UBN.
Best photographer window: late June to early September for accessible roads + green steppe + nomad activity. Early October for Eagle Festival in Ölgii (peak Kazakh event of the year). Late Feb to early Mar for the Tsam winter mask festival + frozen Khövsgöl Lake (extreme cold). Avoid Nov–Mar otherwise (−30°C, limited domestic flights, dirt roads impassable).
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Moderate. Long drives + dust + altitude:
- Dunes climbs: 30-min steep ascent through loose sand. Bring sunglasses + scarf for wind.
- Yolyn Am: 4 km canyon walk, easy.
- Tavan Bogd glacier viewpoint: 3 km moderate, altitude 3,000 m+.
- Horseback riding: half-day or full-day on Mongolian ponies — recommended for steppe access. Beginners welcome.
- Camel rides: Bactrian (two-humped), gentle if uncomfortable.
Weather + Light
- Summer (Jun–Aug): 15–30°C, the only practical window for most travel. Naadam Festival mid-July (wrestling/archery/horse-racing nationwide).
- Fall (Sep–Oct): 0–20°C, Eagle Festival, shorter days, color in the larches.
- Winter (Nov–Mar): −30 to −10°C, only for hardcore. Tsam mask festival late Feb–Mar.
- Spring (Apr–May): dust storms, ice break-up, ger camps not all open. Skip.
Cultural Etiquette
- Ger (yurt) visits: enter clockwise, never step on the threshold, accept offered tea/snuff (briefly), don’t refuse hospitality.
- Photography of people: ASK permission, especially of religious figures + nomads. Most are happy; some old people are not.
- Don’t whistle inside a ger (calls bad spirits, per Mongolian belief).
- No pointing at fire or hearth.
Permits + Safety
- Visa: 30-day on-arrival for US, Canada, EU. Check current rules.
- National Park fees: 5,000–10,000 MNT (~$2–4) for most parks. Cash only.
- Drone: technically requires Civil Aviation permit; in practice tour guides handle this. Banned at monasteries + military areas.
- Medical: limited outside UB. Travel insurance with evacuation coverage strongly recommended.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics
Airports
- Ulaanbaatar (UBN) — Chinggis Khaan International. Direct from Seoul, Beijing, Istanbul, Moscow, Frankfurt, Tokyo.
- Ölgii (ULG) — western, Kazakh region. Daily Hunnu Air / Aero Mongolia flights from UB (3 hr).
- Dalanzadgad (DLZ) — south Gobi. Daily Aero Mongolia (1.5 hr from UB).
- Mörön (MXV) — north, Khövsgöl access.
Lodging
Ulaanbaatar: Shangri-La, Blue Sky Tower, Kempinski.
Ger camps (typical wilderness lodging):
- Three Camel Lodge (South Gobi) — luxury eco-lodge
- Gobi Mirage Camp — mid-range
- Toilogt Ger Camp (Khövsgöl Lake)
- Ashihai Wilderness Camps — multiple sites across the country
Food
Mutton + rice + flour-based dishes dominate. Buuz (steamed meat dumplings), khuushuur (fried meat pies), boodog (whole-animal cookout). Vegetarians struggle outside UB — bring snacks. Airag (fermented mare’s milk) is a summer specialty.
Transport
- Hire a driver-guide (typical 4WD: Toyota Land Cruiser or Russian UAZ). Solo travel possible but challenging — language barrier, no road signage, spotty cellular.
- Distances are vast: UB → Ölgii 1,640 km (only fly), UB → Gobi 500 km via plane + 4WD.
- Internal flights: limited frequency, weather-dependent. Build buffer days.
- Roads: 30% of total network is paved. Off-road driving is the norm, not the exception.
