Winter (Dec-Feb) is cool, occasionally snowy in Amman + Petra rim. Summer (Jun-Sep) is hot enough to be dangerous in Wadi Rum + the Dead Sea basin.

Duration

8-10 days ideal, 6 days minimum

Jordan compresses four major photographic subjects into a 400 km north-south loop that you can drive in a week. The Hellenistic-Nabataean facades of Petra carved into rose-red sandstone, the Mars-orange dunes and granite massifs of Wadi Rum where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed, the salt-crusted shores of the Dead Sea (lowest point on Earth at -430m), and the Roman-era cardo and colonnaded forum of Jerash. Anchoring it all is Amman — a hilltop capital of white stone with a 2nd-century Roman theatre embedded in the modern downtown. October through April is the photographer's window — summer temperatures hit 45°C in Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea basin.

Gear Essentials

Wide angle (16-35mm) for Petra facades + Siq slot canyon + Wadi Rum panoramas Mid-tele (70-200mm) for Bedouin portraits + compressed dune ridges Long tele (300mm+) for Wadi Rum massifs from a distance Polarizer (sky saturation + Dead Sea reflection) Sturdy desert shoes — Petra is 4-8 km of walking per day, dusty + uneven Layered desert clothing — 35°C days to 5°C nights even in spring Modest dress for mosque visits + cultural respect (long sleeves + pants for both genders) Plenty of water + electrolytes — desert heat is dehydrating even when cool

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate. Petra is the most demanding:

  • Petra full visit: 7-10 km of walking per day, dusty + uneven. The Treasury is 1.2 km through the Siq from the entrance. The Monastery (Ad Deir) is 800 steps up — about 1 hour each way.
  • High Place of Sacrifice: 600 steps to a panoramic plateau above the Treasury. ~3 hours return.
  • Wadi Rum: vehicle-based, walks optional. 4WD on soft sand.
  • Jerash: paved Roman ruins, level. 2-3 hours.
  • Mount Nebo: drive-up, very short walk to the viewpoint.

Temperature + Weather

  • Dec-Feb: 8-15°C days, 3-8°C nights at altitude (Amman, Petra). Cool. Occasional snow on the Petra rim.
  • Mar-May: 18-25°C days, 8-15°C nights. Photographer’s prime. Desert wildflowers bloom in March + April.
  • Jun-Sep: 28-35°C in Amman, 38-45°C in Wadi Rum + Dead Sea. Dangerously hot for daytime desert work.
  • Oct-Nov: 18-26°C days, 10-15°C nights. Cool, clear, secondary window.
  • UV: high year-round. Sun hat + UPF 50 essential.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Modest dress at mosques + religious sites — long sleeves + pants. Headscarves provided at mosque entrances.
  • Photography of locals: ask first. Most Jordanians are warm and happy to be photographed, but Bedouin women generally prefer not to be.
  • Bedouin hospitality: if invited to tea, accept. Refusing is rude. Coffee/tea served standing usually means you’re expected to leave soon.
  • Ramadan: no eating/drinking in public during daylight. Restaurants in tourist areas stay open with discretion. Iftar at sunset is a beautiful photo moment.

Permits + Access

  • Jordan Pass ($70/$75/$80 by Petra days) — buy online before arrival, covers visa + Petra + 40 sites. Worth it if staying 3+ nights
  • Visa on arrival alternative: $57, but Petra alone is $70/day = Jordan Pass usually wins
  • Wadi Rum entry: $7 separate (or covered by Jordan Pass)
  • Drone use: requires Civil Aviation Authority permit. Tour operators can arrange. Banned at most archaeological sites.
  • Petra by Night (Mon/Wed/Thu 8:30pm): $25 separate ticket, 2-hour candlelit walk through Siq to Treasury
