Indonesia's photographer's loop runs Java → Bali → Flores: three islands chained by volcanoes and temples. Java holds Borobudur (9th-century largest Buddhist temple at sunrise), Mt Bromo (Tengger caldera with Semeru erupting behind), and Ijen (acidic turquoise crater lake with sulfur miners and blue-fire night). Bali adds Ubud's emerald rice terraces, Tanah Lot's sea-stack Hindu temple, and Mt Batur's pre-dawn caldera hike. Komodo National Park (Flores side) ends the arc with Padar Island's three-bay panorama and the world's only wild population of Komodo dragons. Dry season May-October aligns perfectly across all three islands.

Gear Essentials

Wide angle (16-35mm) for Bromo caldera + Borobudur stupas + Padar panorama Mid-tele (70-200mm) for compressed volcanic ridges + Ubud rice terraces Long tele (300mm+) for Komodo dragons (10m minimum distance + ranger) Gas mask + sturdy boots for Ijen blue-fire pre-dawn descent Sturdy hiking shoes — Bromo + Batur + Ijen all involve 2-3 hr walks Light rain shell for occasional showers + sea spray at Tanah Lot Modest sarong + sash to enter Bali Hindu temples (often provided) Insect repellent + sun protection — equatorial UV is intense

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate to strenuous. Multiple pre-dawn hikes:

  • Borobudur sunrise: paved steps to the platform. Easy.
  • Mt Bromo: 4WD to Penanjakan viewpoint, then short walk + pony or walk to crater rim (250 steps).
  • Ijen blue-fire: 3 km hike up + 800m descent into crater. Strenuous + gas mask required (sulfur dioxide poisoning real risk).
  • Mt Batur: 1,717m summit hike. 2 hr up steep volcanic gravel. Strenuous.
  • Padar Island: 30 min steep hike to viewpoint.
  • Komodo Island: easy ranger-led 2 km loop.

Climate

  • May-Oct (dry): 22-32°C, clear skies, low humidity, calm seas. Photographer’s prime.
  • Nov-Mar (wet): daily afternoon thunderstorms, occasional all-day rain. Komodo liveaboards mostly cancel Jan-Feb.
  • Equatorial sun: extreme UV year-round. Sun hat + UPF 50.
  • Volcano nights: 5-15°C at altitude (Bromo + Batur). Layer up.

Health + Safety

  • Ijen sulfur: SO₂ levels can spike dangerously. Wear full-face gas mask provided by guides. Don’t descend into the crater without one.
  • Komodo dragons: 10 m minimum distance + always with armed ranger. Attacks are rare but lethal.
  • Volcanic activity: check VolcanoDiscovery before booking — Bromo + Semeru + Ijen occasionally close on heightened activity
  • Sea conditions: liveaboards rough in Mar + Dec. Bring anti-seasickness.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Bali Hindu temples: sarong + sash required (often provided at entrance). No menstruating women allowed (locally enforced).
  • Borobudur: respectful walking (clockwise), no climbing on stupas.
  • Photography of locals: ask first. Hindu ceremonies happen everywhere in Bali — observe from a respectful distance.
  • Nyepi (Day of Silence, March in Bali): entire island shuts down for 24 hours. No flights, no roads, no electricity. Plan around or specifically for the Ogoh-Ogoh parades the night before.

Permits + Access

  • Visa on arrival $35 for 30 days
  • Borobudur sunrise: separate $35-50 ticket, limited slots, book ahead
  • Bromo Tengger Semeru NP: $13 weekday / $15 weekend
  • Ijen: $12 entry + $20 mandatory guide
  • Komodo NP: $250 entry (2024 price hike — controversial)
  • Drone: legal with permit for most areas. Banned at active volcano summits.
