Duration

10-14 days ideal, 7 days for Ilulissat/Disko Bay

Greenland is remote wilderness photography at its most extreme — towering icebergs calved from the Ilulissat Icefjord, dog-sled expeditions under the Northern Lights, and vast ice cap vistas. Small ship expeditions and charter flights provide access to this largely roadless island.

Itinerary at a Glance

A 13-Day Greenland Photography Arc

Day 1 — Fly Copenhagen → Kangerlussuaq (4.5 hrs) or via Iceland. Stay Hotel Kangerlussuaq. Drive out to Russell Glacier (40km) for the icecap edge.

Day 2 — Fly Kangerlussuaq → Ilulissat (45 min). Stay Hotel Arctic (Inuit-style igloo rooms) or Hotel Icefiord. Sundown over Disko Bay icebergs.

Day 3 — Ilulissat Icefjord UNESCO. Walk to the boardwalk overlooking the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier (Jakobshavn) — the most productive in the Northern Hemisphere. Icebergs the size of buildings.

Day 4 — Ferry across the bay to Disko Island (2-3 hrs from Ilulissat). Qeqertarsuaq’s black basalt cliffs and columns rival Iceland’s, and humpback whales feed in the iceberg-studded waters offshore. Return on the evening boat.

Day 5 — Iceberg boat tour + Sermermiut Valley. Half-day boat among 4-story icebergs. Then walk from the UNESCO boardwalk into Sermermiut Valley — ancient settlement site with a commanding icefjord viewpoint (4500-year Inuit history).

Day 6 — Helicopter to Eqi Glacier OR midnight sail. Eqi calves visibly during the day — helicopter tour from Ilulissat. Or midnight-sun iceberg sail (Jun-Aug).

Day 7 — Fly Ilulissat → Sisimiut (1 hr). Greenland’s 2nd-largest town. Stay Hotel Sisimiut. Hike Palasip Qaqqaa for the town panorama.

Day 8 — Dog sled ride (winter only) or Arctic Circle Trail base. Sisimiut is the trail’s north terminus (160km to Kangerlussuaq, 8-10 days).

Day 9 — Fly Sisimiut → Nuuk (1 hr). Capital (pop 18,000). Stay Hotel Hans Egede. Nuuk Fjord boat trip to abandoned village of Kangeq.

Day 10 — Nuuk + Nuuk Fjord. Greenland National Museum, Hans Egede’s house, Northern Lights from Quassussuup Tunua hill (Sep-Apr).

Day 11 — East-coast hop: fly to Kulusuk & Tasiilaq. Cross the icecap by Dash-8 for Greenland’s wilder side — colorful houses against pack ice, granite fjords, and living Inuit kayak culture.

Day 12 — South to Uunartoq Hot Springs. Fly to Narsarsuaq, then boat out to Uunartoq island — soak in the open-air spring as icebergs drift past, with the Norse ruins of Hvalsey nearby.

Day 13 — Fly Narsarsuaq → Copenhagen home (direct in summer, or via Nuuk).

Best photographer windows: late September through early October — autumn tundra color + first aurora + still-accessible by boat. Late June to early August for midnight sun + icebergs at peak melt + dog-sledding tours over the icecap. February-March for aurora season + frozen sea ice. Avoid Nov-Jan polar night (3-hr civil twilight only).

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate. Boat + helicopter + short walks dominate:

  • Ilulissat boardwalk: 2.5km easy walk to icefjord viewpoint.
  • Sermermiut: 1km easy from boardwalk.
  • Russell Glacier (Kangerlussuaq): 4WD-only drive 40km on dirt; short walk.
  • Palasip Qaqqaa (Sisimiut): 2-hr hike, moderate.
  • Arctic Circle Trail: 160km 8-10 day wilderness trek with refugio huts. Experienced trekkers only.
  • Iceberg boats + helicopters: passive but expensive.

Health + Safety

  • Cold: even summer, water + wind keep ambient near 0°C. Layers + waterproofs.
  • Calving glaciers: stay 50m+ from the edge. Crevasses kill.
  • Polar bears: rare in tourist areas (Disko Bay, Nuuk) but present in eastern Greenland. Local guides carry rifles.
  • Mosquitoes Jul-Aug: ferocious inland. DEET + headnet mandatory away from coast.
  • Tap water: cleanest on Earth (literally glacial meltwater).
  • Limited medical: Nuuk has the main hospital. Severe injuries = MedEvac to Denmark.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Inuit Greenlandic culture: small communities (56,000 total population). Photograph respectfully — ask before close-ups of people. Tip well in restaurants (10-15%).
  • Hunters + sled dogs: working animals, not pets. Don’t approach sled dogs (they bite).
  • Whale + seal meat: traditional + culturally important. Available in restaurants; controversial photographically. Be sensitive.
  • Drones: legal but require Danish CAA registration. Banned over military areas + within 5km of airports.

Permits + Access

  • Schengen visa-free 90 days (Greenland is Danish autonomous territory — Denmark Schengen applies).
  • No special park permits.
  • Ilulissat Icefjord UNESCO entry: free.
  • Helicopter tours: book months ahead summer.
  • Arctic Circle Trail: free; book huts via Greenland Trekking.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics

Airports

  • Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) — main intl gateway (closing for upgrades; Nuuk to take over by 2025-2026). 4.5-hr direct from Copenhagen.
  • Nuuk (GOH) — new intl-capable runway 2024+. Direct from Copenhagen.
  • Ilulissat (JAV) — domestic from Kangerlussuaq / Nuuk.
  • Iceland Reykjavik (KEF) — alternate jumping point via Air Iceland to several Greenland airports.

Lodges + Lodging

  • Ilulissat: Hotel Arctic (igloo cabins on a ridge overlooking icebergs), Hotel Icefiord (closest to UNESCO boardwalk), World of Greenland Ilulissat.
  • Kangerlussuaq: Hotel Kangerlussuaq (only option, basic).
  • Sisimiut: Hotel Sisimiut, Sisimiut Sport.
  • Nuuk: Hotel Hans Egede (heritage), Hotel Aurora, Inuk Hostels.
  • East Greenland (advanced): Tasiilaq Hotel (remote, polar-bear country).

Food

Greenlandic cuisine = North Atlantic + Inuit. Suaasat (seal soup — traditional), reindeer steak, musk ox, halibut, snow crab, dried fish (kalaalimerneq). Standouts: Sarfalik (Nuuk — modern Greenlandic), Restaurant Ulo at Hotel Arctic (Ilulissat, iceberg-view fine dining), Hotel Icefiord restaurant (kayak-themed plates).

Transport

  • Air Greenland is the only way between towns. No roads connect settlements. Dash 7 + Bombardier props.
  • Boat ferries Disko Line Arctic Umiaq between Disko Bay villages.
  • Helicopters for Eqi Glacier + remote sites; Air Greenland charter ~$700/hr.
  • Dog sled + snowmobile winter only.
  • NO car rental — distances too small in towns to need one.

Side Trips

  • East Greenland (Tasiilaq) — remote, polar bears, ice caves, less touristed.
  • Eqi Glacier — calving glacier camp, helicopter access.
  • Disko Island — across from Ilulissat, hot springs + walks.
  • Iceland — natural pairing via Air Iceland.
  • Svalbard (Norway) — same latitude, polar bear photography.
