Greece
Santorini blue domes, Meteora cliff monasteries, Athens Acropolis, Cycladic whitewash — Mediterranean light at its most photogenic
When to Go
Drag across months to filter by season, conditions, and light
Greek summer (Jul-Aug) is brutal — temperatures hit 38-42°C in Athens + lower-altitude sites, ferries + islands crowded with European holiday tourists. The photographer's prime is shoulder season (May-Jun + Sep-Oct) when the light is softer, crowds thinner, and temperatures comfortable. Easter (Orthodox calendar) varies by year + adds candle-lit church processions everywhere.

Duration
10-14 days ideal, 7 days minimum
Greece compresses the photographer's bucket list into a single small Mediterranean country. The Athens Acropolis at dusk anchors the Classical world. Meteora's 14th-century monasteries perched on natural rock pillars deliver an other-worldly mountain composition. Delphi's ancient theatre + Temple of Apollo cling to Mt Parnassus. The Cyclades islands (Mykonos, Naxos, Santorini) provide whitewashed buildings + blue domes + impossibly blue Aegean against volcanic cliffs. Crete's Samaria Gorge + Venetian harbours add a Mediterranean wildcard at the southern edge. Late April-June and September-October are the photographer's prime — warm but not blazing, lower crowds than peak summer, light at its softest.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Beginner-moderate. Mostly walking + ferries:
- Acropolis: 1-2 km of marble walking (slippery in rain). 80m climb.

- Delphi: terraced site, 200m elevation gain to the stadium.
- Cyclades islands: walkable old towns + steep cliff paths.
- Fira to Oia hike: 10 km, 4 hr, undulating cliff path.
- Samaria Gorge (Crete): 16 km, 5-7 hr, downhill — punishing on knees. Bus pickup at south end + ferry back.

Cultural Etiquette
- Meteora monasteries: women cover legs (provided wraps) + shoulders. Men long pants. No photography inside chapels.
- Greek Orthodox Easter (variable, Apr-May): the country’s most important holiday. Midnight Holy Saturday candle procession at every church — magical but respectful behaviour essential.
