Two distinct seasons. Winter (Nov-Mar) is the photographer's prime — 20-26°C in the Nile Valley, cool desert nights, low haze. Summer (May-Sep) hits 45°C in Luxor + Aswan, dangerous for outdoor work. Ramadan (variable, Feb-Apr 2026-2030) restricts daytime food + drink; sites stay open but staffing thin.

Duration

Egypt compresses five distinct photographic stories into a long but linear corridor along the Nile and out to two western deserts. The Pyramids at Giza remain the single most recognisable man-made photograph on Earth. Luxor's Karnak hypostyle hall + Valley of the Kings tomb paintings + Hatshepsut's terraced temple compress 3,000 years of Pharaonic art into one walkable site. Aswan's Philae temple and Abu Simbel's relocated rock-cut facade anchor the Nubian south. Beyond the Nile, the White Desert's wind-carved chalk formations and Siwa's Berber oasis offer compositions that look like another planet. October through April is the photographer's window — summer Nile Valley temperatures hit 45°C and tomb interiors become unbearable.

Gear Essentials

Wide angle (16-35mm) for pyramids + temple courtyards + desert panoramas Mid-tele (70-200mm) for compressed tomb-painting details + sphinx portraits Fast lens (f/2.0 or faster) for dim tomb interiors (no flash, no tripod) Polarizer for sky + Nile reflections + Red Sea visibility Sturdy desert shoes — Giza plateau + White Desert + Siwa are dusty + uneven Layered desert clothing — 25°C days to 5°C nights in winter desert Modest clothing for mosques + religious sites (especially women) Headlamp for pre-dawn pyramid sound-and-light setup + tomb low-light
Itinerary at a Glance

A 14-Day Egypt Photography Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Cairo (CAI). Check into a Giza-view hotel (Mena House, Marriott Mena House). Sunset on the rooftop with the pyramids backdrop.

Day 2 — Giza Pyramids + Sphinx + Grand Egyptian Museum. Pre-dawn entry at 8am opening — beat the tour buses. Wide-angle from the western desert side. Sphinx + Valley Temple in golden hour. Afternoon: Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at the Giza plateau.

Day 3 — Fly Cairo → Sharm el-Sheikh (Sinai). Domestic 1-hr flight. Transfer to St. Catherine’s Monastery base. Afternoon orientation at the world’s oldest continuously inhabited monastery.

Day 4 — Mt. Sinai sunrise + return Cairo. Pre-dawn hike up Mt. Sinai (camel optional first half, then the ‘Steps of Repentance’) for sunrise from Moses’s summit. Descend, visit the monastery, fly back to Cairo by evening.

Day 5 — Day-trip to Alexandria (3 hr drive each way). Qaitbay Citadel on the site of the ancient Lighthouse, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, Roman Amphitheatre. Mediterranean light is softer than Cairo’s desert glare. Return Cairo for the night.

Day 6 — Drive Cairo → Siwa Oasis (8 hr west). Long drive across the Western Desert. Overnight at Adrere Amellal (mud-brick eco-lodge) or Albabenshal (restored Shali Fortress).

Day 7 — Siwa exploration. Shali Fortress ruins, Cleopatra’s Bath (warm spring), Mountain of the Dead, Oracle Temple of Amun (Alexander the Great’s visit). Sunset at Fatnas Island over the salt lake.

Day 8 — Drive Siwa → Bahariya → White Desert (8 hr). Camp overnight at the White Desert chalk formations — chicken + tree shapes carved by wind. Milky Way over white chalk against orange sand.

Day 9 — White Desert sunrise → fly to Luxor. Pre-dawn shoot, drive back to Cairo, then domestic flight Cairo → Luxor (1 hr) to Nile Valley.

Day 10 — Luxor East Bank. Karnak Temple at golden hour — the Great Hypostyle Hall’s 134 columns is unmatched. Luxor Temple at night (lit). Avenue of Sphinxes connecting them.

Day 11 — Luxor West Bank: Valley of the Kings + Hatshepsut. Pre-dawn hot-air balloon over the Nile + Valley of the Kings ($100-150). Then Hatshepsut’s terraced mortuary temple. Colossi of Memnon at the entrance.

Day 12 — Nile cruise Luxor → Aswan (or fly direct). Edfu Temple + Kom Ombo Temple on the way. Felucca sail near Aswan.

Day 13 — Aswan + Philae. Philae Temple (relocated when High Dam created Lake Nasser) by motorboat at sunrise. Unfinished Obelisk, Nubian villages on Elephantine Island. Old Cataract Hotel sunset.

Day 14 — Abu Simbel pre-dawn flight + return. Fly Aswan → Abu Simbel (45 min) for first-light on the four colossal Ramesses II statues. The Sun Festival (Feb 22 + Oct 22) is when sunlight penetrates to the inner sanctuary — booking required years ahead. Return to Cairo for departure.

Optimal timing is November through February — cool, dry, clear. Sun Festival dates (Feb 22 + Oct 22) at Abu Simbel are once-a-year events worth scheduling around.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Moderate. Mostly vehicle-based + temple walking:

  • Giza Plateau: 2-3 km of walking, dusty + uneven terrain. Inside pyramids requires squat-walking through low passages — not for claustrophobia or knee problems.
  • Karnak + Luxor temples: 3-5 km flat walking. Karnak in afternoon heat is brutal. Pre-9am best.
  • Valley of the Kings: stooping through tomb passages. Steep stairs in some tombs (KV5).
  • Siwa + White Desert: 4WD tours include short walks on dunes + chalk formations. Manageable.
  • Hot-air balloon over Luxor: 60-90 min standing in basket. No physical demands.

Heat Management

  • Nov-Mar: 20-26°C days, 5-12°C nights. Photographer’s prime.
  • Mar-May: 25-35°C, getting hot. Khamaseen sandstorms in March-April (50-day dust storm season).
  • Jun-Sep: 38-45°C in Luxor + Aswan. Dangerous for outdoor work between 10am-4pm. Tomb interiors become unbearable.
  • Oct: cooling, secondary window.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Modest dress at mosques + religious sites — women need head covering + long sleeves. Loaner abayas provided at most.
  • Photography of locals: ask first, especially women. Children often ask for backsheesh (small tip) for portraits.
  • Backsheesh culture: tipping is everywhere ($1-5 for small services). Carry small bills.
  • Ramadan: no eating/drinking in public during daylight. Sites stay open but service is slower; Iftar at sunset is a photo moment.

Permits + Access

  • E-visa $25 processed online before arrival
  • Photography permits required inside many tombs ($14-20). Bought at the gate, not all sites accept payment
  • Tripods banned at most temple + pyramid + tomb sites — verify before carrying
  • Drones strictly prohibited nationwide for tourists
  • Inside Khufu’s Great Pyramid: $22, no cameras allowed at all
  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival (Feb 22 + Oct 22): book lodging 12+ months ahead — crowds peak both days
