Gear Essentials
Itinerary at a Glance
A 7-Day Churchill Photography Arc (Polar Bear Season)
Day 1 — Fly Winnipeg (YWG) → Churchill (YYQ). Calm Air or Canadian North, 2.5 hr. Land at the world’s polar-bear capital. Town tour + Itsanitaq Museum of Inuit art. Stay Lazy Bear Lodge or Tundra Inn.
Day 2 — Churchill Coast + estuary. The Churchill Coast along the river mouth: beluga snorkeling site and kayak launch (Jul–Aug, 10,000+ belugas), polar-bear-watch shoreline in fall. Itsanitaq grounds + Cape Merry battery at golden hour.
Day 3 — Hudson Bay Coast (4WD/snowmobile depending on season). Sea-ice formations, pressure ridges, and coastal beluga whale feeding (Jul–Aug only, when polar bears are elsewhere). Or polar bear walking-tour at Seal River Lodge (60 km north, fly-in only, only permit-holding operator that allows walking among bears).
Day 4 — Northern Studies Centre + aurora. Churchill sits under the auroral oval — high probability of aurora Aug–Apr on clear nights. Aurora pods (heated glass domes), warm vehicle, or the Northern Studies Centre lodge with its monitoring deck.
Day 5 — Tundra Buggy Lodge overnight. Frontiers North parks the Tundra Buggy Lodge — a buggy-hotel — out on the tundra near Halfway Point. Wake up to bears at the window. Multi-day package premium; permits sell out 12-18 months ahead.
Day 6 — Tundra Buggy to Cape Churchill. Full-day excursion east to Cape Churchill (2 hr from the lodge). The highest concentration of polar bears on earth gathers here waiting for ice to form (mid-Oct to early-Nov peak). Drive across kettle ponds + fireweed tundra.
Day 6 alt / season swap — Wapusk Denning (Feb–Mar only). Wapusk National Park polar bear denning emergence — moms and newborn cubs (Jan–Feb births, emergence mid-Feb to mid-Mar). Lodge-based access only (Wat’chee Lodge, Watchee Expeditions). Extreme cold (−40°C).
Day 7 — Fly back to Winnipeg. Final town walks, departure.
Best photographer windows: - Mid-Oct to early-Nov: polar bear viewing — bears gather on coast waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze. - Late Feb to early Mar: Wapusk denning (separate permits, fly-in lodges only). - Jul to mid-Aug: beluga whales (4,000+ in Churchill River estuary). - Aug–Apr: aurora-viewing nights (often combined with bears or whales). Avoid late-November to mid-October (bears on the ice + no aurora season).
