Itinerary at a Glance

An 11-Day Canadian Rockies Photography Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Calgary (YYC). Drive to Banff (1.5 hrs). Stay Fairmont Banff Springs (the iconic castle hotel) or Buffalo Mountain Lodge. Sunset at Surprise Corner overlooking the Springs.

Day 2 — Banff area. Pre-dawn at Vermilion Lakes for Mt Rundle reflection. Lake Minnewanka, Bow Valley Parkway wildlife.

Day 3 — Lake Louise + Moraine Lake. Lake Louise is iconic teal blue at the Fairmont Chateau. Moraine Lake’s Valley of the Ten Peaks is closed to private vehicles — shuttle from Lake Louise parking. Stay Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Day 4 — Yoho NP (BC side). A 30-min hop west of Lake Louise over Kicking Horse Pass. Emerald Lake (smaller but possibly more photogenic than Lake Louise), Takakkaw Falls (Canada’s 2nd tallest), Natural Bridge. Stay Emerald Lake Lodge.

Day 5 — Icefields Parkway day 1 (Lake Louise → Saskatchewan River Crossing, 80km). Bow Lake + Crowfoot Glacier + Peyto Lake (THE iconic Rockies view from the boardwalk). Mistaya Canyon. Stay The Crossing Resort overnight.

Day 6 — Abraham Lake (David Thompson Hwy). Detour east on Hwy 11 (40 min) to Preacher’s Point for dawn. In deep winter (Jan–Mar) the famous frozen methane bubbles stack beneath clear ice — a winter-special stop; in summer the reservoir is windswept turquoise under Mt Michener. Return to The Crossing.

Day 7 — Icefields Parkway day 2 (Crossing → Jasper, 150km). Athabasca Glacier (Columbia Icefield). Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Falls. Stay Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

Day 8 — Jasper NP. Maligne Lake + Spirit Island (boat tour to the most-photographed island in the Rockies). Dark sky preserve at night.

Day 9 — Return south on Icefields Parkway. The full 230km in reverse — second-chance light at Bow Lake and Peyto, plus any stops the weather stole on the way north. Stay Banff.

Day 10 — Kootenay NP + Radium. Marble Canyon, Paint Pots ochre springs. Hot Springs at Radium. Back in Banff for a final sunset at Two Jack Lake. Optional Banff Gondola for Sulphur Mountain panorama.

Day 11 — Drive Banff → Calgary → fly home.

Best photographer windows: mid-September through early October — larch trees (golden Larix lyallii) at Larch Valley + Sentinel Pass + Moraine Lake (the ‘Golden Larch Window’ is 2 weeks, dates vary year to year). Late June for wildflowers + glacier melt at peak. February for frozen lakes + snow + Ice Magic Festival.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Easy to moderate. Most photo spots are viewpoints or short walks:

  • Lake Louise + Moraine Lake: parking + short walks. Crowded.
  • Peyto Lake boardwalk: 10-min uphill walk.
  • Athabasca Glacier toe walk: 30-min easy, OR Ice Explorer bus to walk on the glacier.
  • Larch Valley + Sentinel Pass (Moraine area): 11km, 5 hrs, 720m gain. Moderate alpine hike for the iconic larch shots.
  • Plain of Six Glaciers (Lake Louise): 14km, 5 hrs, moderate.
  • Spirit Island: boat tour 1.5 hrs, no walk.

Health + Safety

  • Bears: black bears + grizzlies common. Carry bear spray (not allowed on planes — buy locally for ~$50, sells out summer). Travel in groups + make noise on trails. Never run from a bear.
  • Moose + elk: aggressive in rut (Sep-Oct + May). Stay 100m back. Do not approach.
  • Weather: snow possible any month. Bring warm layers + rain shell year-round.
  • Wildfires Jul-Sep: monitor parkscanada.gc.ca for closures + smoke. Worst summers have meant Jasper-area evacuations.
  • Tap water: drinkable everywhere.
  • Altitude: peaks at 3,000m+ but most photo spots at 1,500-2,000m — easy.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Indigenous Stoney Nakoda + Ktunaxa land: acknowledge in photo captions if commercial use.
  • Park photography permits: required for COMMERCIAL use (model shoots, weddings). Personal use including social media free.
  • Drones: BANNED in all Canadian national parks without Parks Canada permit (very rarely granted).
  • Bear spray: legal to carry; don’t put in checked luggage.

Permits + Access

  • ETA ($7 CAD) required pre-arrival for US/UK/EU/AU via canada.ca.
  • Parks Canada Discovery Pass: $76 CAD adult annual / $145 family — entry to all national parks. Per-day $11.
  • Moraine Lake: shuttle bus only since 2023; no private vehicle access. Book parks.canada.ca shuttle months ahead.
  • Lake Louise parking: paid reservation system summer, fills daily.
  • Maligne Lake + Spirit Island boat: book Pursuit Banff Jasper Collection.
