British Columbia’s coast is the world’s premier grizzly photography destination. Five distinct regions — Chilko Lake interior, Bella Coola valley, Inside Passage fjords, the Great Bear Rainforest with its rare Spirit Bears, and the Khutzeymateen sanctuary — each offer a different chapter of the salmon-and-bears story across May through October.

Gear Essentials

Telephoto (300–600mm) for bears Wide angle (16–35mm) for fjord landscapes Polarizer (essential for water saturation) Sturdy weatherproof rain shell + lens covers Tripod (boat work needs sturdy) Bear spray (provided by lodges) Layered Gore-Tex (rainfall 2,000–4,000mm/yr on coast)
Itinerary at a Glance

A 12-Day Coastal Grizzly Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Vancouver (YVR). Connect to Bella Coola (YBL) via Pacific Coastal. Overnight at Tweedsmuir Park Lodge.

Day 2 — Bella Coola & Atnarko Valley. Bear viewing on the Atnarko River — pink salmon (odd years) or coho (Aug-Sep). Eagle photography at lower river bends.

Day 3 — Float-plane to Chilko Lake. Tsylos Park Lodge. Sockeye salmon run + grizzlies + turquoise glacier-fed lake. Shoulder weather can ground flights — build flexibility into the schedule.

Day 4 — Chilko Lake bear viewing. All-day fishing-platform sessions. Sockeye peak first 2 weeks of August; bears feeding constantly during the peak.

Day 5 — Knight Inlet / Glendale Cove. Float-plane south to Knight Inlet Lodge. Bear viewing platforms above the salmon stream — May-October. Coastal grizzlies fishing.

Day 6 — Nimmo Bay. Short hop to Nimmo Bay Resort. Heli-photography of glaciers and remote inlets — premium operator base. Combine with sunset salmon-stream sessions.

Day 7 — Charter north into the Great Bear Rainforest / Mussel Inlet. Multi-day boat-based viewing begins. Humpback whales in the open inlets.

Day 8-9 — Princess Royal Island (Spirit Bear). Spirit Bear Lodge at Klemtu — Heiltsuk-owned. White-coated Kermode bears at the salmon streams — September-October only.

Day 10 — Cruise north to Khutzeymateen Inlet. Boat-based viewing in Canada’s only dedicated grizzly sanctuary — no road access, boats run out of Prince Rupert. Khutzeymateen is a fixed-itinerary, permit-only program.

Day 11 — Drive Hwy 37A to Stewart-Hyder for the Salmon Glacier. From Prince Rupert, 4 hr to Stewart. Sunset at the Salmon Glacier overlook + Fish Creek bears below.

Day 12 — Prince Rupert (YPR) → Vancouver → home.

Total drive: 200 mi (Bella Coola Hill + Stewart access). Total flight: 400 mi (float-plane). Total boat: 250 nm. Best done late August through early October for combined bears, salmon, and color.

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Beginner-friendly with float-plane logistics. Most viewing is from elevated platforms or boats — you do not hike to bears. Float-plane and remote-lodge access requires:

  • Tolerance for weather delays (Coast Mountain fog can ground flights for days)
  • Comfort with small aircraft (DHC-2 Beavers, Cessna 180s on floats)
  • Flexibility with small boat travel in saltwater inlets (Inside Passage swell can be modest to significant)

Bear Country Protocols

You’re in prime grizzly habitat. Required practices:

  • Always with a guide — independent bear viewing is illegal in most BC sanctuaries
  • Bear spray on body at all times when off the boat / platform
  • No food in tents at lodges; secure food per lodge protocols
  • Yield to bears on trails — back away slowly; never run

Weather

BC Coast is wet — annual rainfall 2,000-4,000mm in the Inside Passage. Expect rain on most days outside July-August. Layered Gore-Tex essential. Interior (Chilko Lake) is dramatically drier — bring extra layers, fewer rain shells.

Permits

  • Khutzeymateen Sanctuary: BC Parks permit required, May-July only. Boat-based, fixed-itinerary.
  • Princess Royal / Spirit Bear: Heiltsuk Nation cultural permit; book through licensed lodges only.
  • Chilko Lake: BC Parks day-use; lodges have private float-plane access.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics

Airports

  • Vancouver International (YVR) — primary hub; daily transatlantic + transpacific.
  • Bella Coola (YBL) — small airport, 50-min from YVR via Pacific Coastal Airlines (Saab 340). Gateway to the Tweedsmuir/Atnarko region.
  • Prince Rupert (YPR) — small jet service from YVR. Gateway to Khutzeymateen and Stewart-Hyder.
  • Smithers (YYD) — useful for Stewart-Hyder access (4 hr drive on Hwy 37A).

Lodging

Wilderness lodges are the standard:

  • Tweedsmuir Park Lodge (Bella Coola Valley) — bears + heli-photography
  • Tsylos Park Lodge (Chilko Lake) — float-plane access, sockeye + bears
  • Spirit Bear Lodge (Klemtu, Princess Royal) — Heiltsuk-owned, Spirit Bear viewing
  • Nimmo Bay Resort — luxury, heli-everything, May-October
  • Knight Inlet Lodge / Glendale Cove — bear platforms, May-October
  • Bear Claw Lodge (Stewart-Hyder area) — Salmon Glacier + Fish Creek bears

Food

All wilderness lodges serve full meals (BC seafood, regional cuisine). Town stops (Stewart, Bella Coola) have limited but good options. Bring snacks for transit days.

Transport

  • Float-plane is the dominant access mode — DHC-2 Beavers + Cessna 180s
  • Coastal vessels (50-100 ft motor yachts) for multi-day Inside Passage trips
  • 4WD vehicle for Stewart-Hyder + Bella Coola Hill (Hwy 20 — gravel and steep)
  • No road access to Princess Royal, Khutzeymateen, Knight Inlet (boat or plane only)

Permits

  • Park entrance fees: minimal in BC
  • Discover Pass ($35/year) covers most provincial parks
  • Bear-viewing permits are bundled into lodge bookings — confirm at booking time
