Northeast Brazil
Month-by-month conditions for the Lencois Maranhenses dune lagoons and the mesas, falls and light-beam caves of Chapada Diamantina

The two parks run on opposite rain calendars that happen to align for photographers: Maranhao's rains (January-June) fill the lagoons just as Bahia's dry season (April-September) clears the Chapada's skies. June to September is the trip.

Trip Overview
Daily Budget
$80-$180 / day
Permits & Visa
No permits required
Park entry is guided-access in practice: the Lencois Maranhenses dune circuits run by licensed 4x4 from Barreirinhas or Santo Amaro, Chapada's caves and the Pati valley require accredited guides, and drones need DECEA/ANAC registration plus ICMBio permission inside both national parks.
Duration
8-10 days across both parks; 4-5 for one
Two of South America's strangest landscapes share Brazil's northeast and a single well-timed trip. On the Maranhao coast, the Lencois Maranhenses roll seventy kilometres of white dunes inland like bedsheets - and every year the equatorial rains fill their hollows with thousands of turquoise and emerald lagoons that peak, swimmable and photographable, from June to September before the dry season drinks them back. A flight south, Bahia's Chapada Diamantina answers with table mesas above a sea of ridges: sunset from Morro do Pai Inacio, the 340-metre thread of the Cachoeira da Fumaca blowing back upward in the wind, and underground pools - Poco Azul and Poco Encantado - where midday sun drills blue light beams into glass-clear water. Equatorial dune lagoons and diamond-country canyons: the same weeks, one itinerary.
Gear Essentials
Itinerary at a Glance
Days 1-3 - Barreirinhas & the lagoon circuits. Base on the Rio Preguicas. Afternoon 4x4 into the Lagoa Azul/Bonita circuit for dune shadows and a lagoon swim at golden hour; next day the quieter Santo Amaro cluster, where the dunes run biggest and the crowds thinnest.
Day 4 - Down the Preguicas. Riverboat to Mandacaru’s lighthouse - climb it for the delta panorama - and Cabure’s sand spit.
Day 5 - Atins. The village where the dunes meet the sea: dawn walks onto the dune edge, kite riders on the trade winds from July, seafood shacks for the weather hours.
Day 6 - The hop. Fly Sao Luis to the Chapada (via Salvador or the Lencois strip) and land among mesas.
Days 7-9 - Chapada Diamantina. Sunset from Morro do Pai Inacio over the whole plateau country; the Fumaca rim where the 340-metre fall blows back upward; and a midday cave day - Poco Azul’s blue beam over glass water, with Poco Encantado as the second act.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
The water calendar is everything. Lagoons fill with the January-June rains, peak June-September, and shrink to salt-pan puddles by December. An October dune trip photographs beautifully but swims badly - move the lagoon shots to the season, not the itinerary.
Equatorial light discipline. At two degrees south the sun climbs fast and vertical: golden hour is short, midday is punishing, and the dunes’ sculpted shadows live in the first and last ninety minutes. Plan siestas, shoot the edges.
Sand and salt. Fine white quartz sand gets into everything - change lenses in the truck, not the dunefield, and keep a dedicated dry bag for the boat legs.
Chapada haze. Deep dry season (Aug-Sep) can milk the horizons with haze and smoke; the clearest mesa panoramas follow the last rains in April-June. The caves do not care - their light comes from above.
Respect the water. The lagoons are rain-fed and fragile - no sunscreen swims in the small ones, and pack out everything; the same goes for the crystal cave pools, where swimming is regulated at Poco Azul and banned at Encantado.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics
Getting there. Sao Luis (SLZ) serves the dunes - Barreirinhas is about four hours by road. The Chapada is reached from Salvador (six hours’ drive) or by regional flight to the Lencois (BA) strip. Between the parks, fly; the road option is a 1,600 km slog.
Dune access. Private vehicles do not enter the park: licensed 4x4 trucks leave Barreirinhas each afternoon for the lagoon circuits, and Santo Amaro runs its own. Atins is reached by 4x4 along the beach or by boat down the Preguicas.
Cave timing. The light beams are a solar appointment: roughly February to October, in the hour or two around local noon. Book Poco Azul and Encantado for midday and shoot landscapes at the edges of the day.
Guides. Chapada’s marquee hikes (Fumaca rim, Pati valley) and all the caves are accredited-guide territory - arrange in Lencois town a day ahead.
