Botswana
Month-by-month conditions for the Okavango's flood, Savuti's predators, the Chobe riverfront and the Kalahari's white pans

The flood is the timetable: Angola's summer rain reaches the delta in the southern winter, so peak water and peak game share the same months. Top camps sell out 12-18 months ahead - Botswana rewards the photographer who plans like it.

Daily Budget
$350-$1,500+ / day (camp tier dependent)
Permits & Visa
No permits required
Park fees ride on camp bookings; drones are banned in Botswana's national parks and reserves; malaria prophylaxis is standard for the north (highest risk in the Nov-Apr rains); and the premier camps genuinely book out 12-18 months ahead.
Duration
8-11 days delta-to-Chobe; +3 for the pans
Botswana runs on a paradox that every safari photographer needs to understand: the Okavango floods in the DRY season. Rain that falls in the Angolan highlands over the southern summer takes half a year to crawl down the Kavango, so the delta's channels brim in June-August exactly as the rest of the country parches - concentrating elephants, lions and everything between along the water. Mokoro canoes glide the reed lines, light aircraft hop between island camps, Savuti's marsh stages the most storied lion-elephant drama in Africa, and the Chobe riverfront delivers the continent's great water-level photography - photo boats at eye height with drinking herds. South, the Makgadikgadi pans bleach to the horizon around Kubu Island's baobabs under Bortle-1 skies, and the green season turns the Kalahari into a storm-lit theatre of newborn game. Book the marquee camps a year out; the calendar does the rest.

Itinerary at a Glance
Day 1 - Maun. The safari capital: charter briefings, last provisions, and the first light-aircraft hop over the delta’s fans - shoot the channels from the co-pilot seat.
Days 2-4 - Inner delta. An island camp in the flood: dawn mokoro lines through the reeds, water-level lechwe and elephant crossings, fish eagles working the lagoons.
Days 5-6 - Moremi & Khwai. Classic game-drive country where the delta meets dry land - leopards in the sausage trees, wild dog dens in season, the Khwai river’s crossings.
Days 7-8 - Savuti. The marsh’s storied lion prides and elephant bulls - long lenses, long patience, the channel’s ghost line across the grass.
Days 9-10 - Chobe riverfront. The finale at water level: photo boats out of Kasane put swimming elephants, drinking herds and carmine bee-eaters at eye height in golden hour.
Extension - The pans. South via Nxai Pan (zebra migration Dec-Mar) to Kubu Island: baobabs on a white horizon, and the Milky Way over the salt at night.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
The flood paradox. Learn it once and the calendar makes sense: Angola’s rain (Nov-Mar) arrives as the delta’s flood in Jun-Aug. Dry season = high water = concentrated game. Green season = local storms over a drying delta = birthing herds and dramatic skies.
Dust discipline. The dry season is talc: change lenses in sealed bags, run two bodies, and blow sensors nightly. The beanbag beats the tripod in every vehicle and boat.
October honesty. The last dry month concentrates game like nothing else - at 40-43 C with smoke haze. It is the hardest, most productive month; know which trade you are making.
Green-season case. November-March brings storm light, newborn antelope, migratory raptors and rates that halve - the connoisseur’s Botswana, accepting some closed camps and wet roads.
Respect the wild. These are unfenced ecosystems: guides set the distances, engines stay off at sightings, and the animals write the schedule - the photography is better for all three.
Airports, Lodging & Logistics
Fly-in reality. Inner-delta camps have no roads - Maun’s charter network is the bus service, luggage rides soft-sided and light (12-15 kg), and the flights themselves are the best aerial shoot in Africa.
Book absurdly early. The famous camps (Moremi, Savuti, the riverfront lodges) sell their dry-season months 12-18 months out. Green season opens space and halves rates.
The photo boats. Kasane’s specialist boats carry gimbal mounts and low freeboards for water-level work - book the private option for golden hour; the scheduled cruises run too high and too crowded.
Health. Northern Botswana is malarial - prophylaxis, repellent, long sleeves at dusk. Winter nights on the pans drop near freezing; October afternoons pass 40 C.
