Itinerary at a Glance
A 10-Day Azores Four-Island Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Ponta Delgada (PDL), São Miguel. Pick up car. Sunset at Miradouro do Pico da Cruz overlooking Sete Cidades crater. Stay Ponta Delgada or Furnas (Furnas Boutique Hotel).
Day 2 — Sete Cidades twin lakes. Pre-dawn at Vista do Rei (King’s View) for the iconic blue + green lake pair inside a 5 km caldera. Walk the rim trail. Mid-day at Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) crater in central island.
Day 3 — Furnas Valley + Terra Nostra Park. Geo-thermal activity — sulfurous fumaroles boiling at Lagoa das Furnas (cozido lunch cooked underground). Garden of Terra Nostra (1780, with ochre-orange thermal pool). Sunset back at the calderas.
Day 4 — Fly São Miguel → Pico (PIX, ~40 min via SATA). Pick up car in Madalena. UNESCO-listed Pico Vineyard Landscape — vines in dark basalt-walled rectangles for wind protection. Sunset at Cabrito. Stay Madalena or Lajes do Pico.
Day 5 — Mount Pico summit. Portugal’s highest peak (2,351 m, dormant volcano). Sunrise summit hike above the cloud sea is transcendent — permit + guide required, 6–9 hrs (most photographers shoot from below). The vineyards of Criação Velha make the classic foreground for Pico shots.
Day 6 — Whale watching from Lajes do Pico. Half-day boat tour from the world’s longest-tradition whale-watching port. Sperm whales, blue whales (rare Apr–May), humpbacks, bottlenose dolphins, common Apr–Oct.
Day 7 — Ferry Pico → Faial (30 min, Madalena → Horta). Faial has Capelinhos volcano (1957–58 eruption added 2.4 km² of new land). Black-and-grey volcanic ash landscape, looks like Iceland. Stay Horta or Faial Resort Hotel.
Day 8 — Faial hydrangea drive + fly Faial → Flores (FLW, via SATA). Drive the hydrangea-lined country roads (peak Jun–Jul blue/purple/pink), then fly west to the westernmost of the Azores + Europe — flowers everywhere (hence the name). Waterfalls + crater lakes. Stay Aldeia da Cuada.
Day 9 — Flores waterfalls + Corvo day-trip. Drive the Flores coast for waterfalls cascading directly into the Atlantic — Ribeira Grande, Poço do Bacalhau, Lagoa do Funda. Optional ferry to Corvo (Europe’s smallest inhabited island).
Day 10 — Fly back to PDL + departure.
Best photographer window: June to early-August for hydrangea peak + long daylight + warm Atlantic + whale season. April–May for hibiscus + flower-saturation + fewer crowds (whales also peak). October–November for moody Atlantic storms + low tourist density. Avoid Jan–Feb (rain + wind + many businesses closed).
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Moderate. Mostly drive-and-walk:
- Sete Cidades rim trail: 12 km loop, gentle elevation, moderate.
- Lagoa do Fogo viewpoints: drive-up + short trail to lake edge.
- Pico Mountain climb: 8 km / 1,150 m, expert, permit-only with guide. Most photographers skip.
- Flores waterfalls: short cliff-edge walks to viewpoints.
- Whale boat: 3–4 hr tour, can be rough Atlantic swell.
Weather + Light
- Year-round mild Atlantic climate: 12–25°C with frequent showers (‘four seasons in a day’ is the local saying).

- Winter (Nov–Feb): 10–18°C, dramatic Atlantic storms, high swell.
- Fog + cloud common, especially over Pico Mountain.
Wildlife
