Itinerary at a Glance
A 7-Day Atacama Desert Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Calama (CJC). 1.5 hr transfer to San Pedro de Atacama (2,400 m). Acclimatize. Walk the small adobe village. Stay Tierra Atacama, Awasi, or Explora.
Day 2 — Valle de la Luna + Valle de la Muerte sunset. Half-day tour of Valle de la Luna (‘Moon Valley’) — salt-encrusted cordillera, the Three Marys formation, Coyote Stone. Sunset at the Anfiteatro mirador for the iconic pink-and-orange transformation on the Andes behind. Next door, Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley) offers sandboarding at sunset on the duna mayor.
Day 3 — El Tatio geysers (pre-dawn 4am start). Drive 2.5 hr at altitude (4,320 m, world’s highest geyser field). Geysers most active at dawn when temperature differential is greatest — steam columns 5–10 m tall. Bring warm clothes (−10°C pre-dawn even in summer). Return via Machuca village.
Day 4 — Laguna Cejar + Ojos del Salar. Salt lakes with 28% salt concentration — float-on-water bizarrely. Photogenic crystalline shore + Andes backdrop. Sunset stargazing tour — Atacama has the world’s clearest night sky (ALMA + ESO observatories nearby).
Day 5 — Salar de Atacama: Laguna Chaxa flamingos. Drive 1 hr south to Salar de Atacama — Chile’s largest salt flat. Los Flamencos National Reserve at Laguna Chaxa: three flamingo species (Chilean, Andean, James’s) feeding among salt cones. Best at sunset.
Day 6 — Altiplanic Lagunas (Miscanti + Miñiques). Drive 2 hr at altitude (4,200 m) to the twin altiplano lakes with vicuña + volcanoes. Stop at Piedras Rojas (a mineral-rich lakebed with red ferric oxides) on the way back. Higher than El Tatio — bring acclimatization day buffer.
Day 7 — Astrophotography night. Atacama has near-zero light pollution + 320+ clear nights/year. Galactic core season Feb–Oct. ALMA observatory tour Sat–Sun (book online).
Day 8 — Departure from CJC.
Best photographer window: April to September — austral winter dry season, clearest skies (zero rain typical Apr–Oct), 0–18°C days, −10–5°C nights. March + October are shoulder. Avoid Jan–Feb (‘Bolivian Winter’) — afternoon thunderstorms can roll in even though it’s the driest desert in the world. June/July for Milky Way galactic-core rising over the salt flats.
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Beginner, with altitude caveats:
- Valle de la Luna: short walks, easy.
- El Tatio: drive-up at 4,320 m. Altitude can affect — acclimatize 2 days first.
- Miscanti + Miñiques: drive-up at 4,200 m. Similar altitude warnings.
- Laguna Cejar: short walk + optional swim (salinity makes you float).
- Sandboarding (Valle de la Muerte): standing on a board, manageable for any fitness level.
Altitude Strategy
- San Pedro (2,400 m): mild altitude effects for some. Drink coca tea, eat light, hydrate.
- Don’t fly direct from sea level to El Tatio: spend 2 days in San Pedro first.
- Diamox (acetazolamide) recommended if sensitive.
- Avoid alcohol the first 48 hr.
Weather + Light
- Days: 12–22°C, dry. UV index extreme — SPF 50+ + lip balm + hat mandatory.
- Nights: 0–10°C, can drop to −10°C at altitude or in June–August.
- Wind: building afternoon winds in spring + summer.
- Light: golden hour stretches at 23°S latitude — soft directional light from 5pm to sunset.
Astrophotography
- One of the world’s premier dark-sky sites (Bortle 1).
- ALMA observatory offers Sat–Sun public tours (book in advance).
- Milky Way galactic core: visible Feb–Oct, best Jun–Aug.
- Tour operators in San Pedro: Atacama Stars (Maury photographer), SPACE, ALMA observatory.
- Astrophotography permits: not required for personal work.
Permits + Cultural
- National park fees: 4,000–10,000 CLP (~$5–12 USD) per attraction — Valle de la Luna, El Tatio, Reserva Los Flamencos. Most tour operators include.
- Drones: technically requires DGAC permit; in practice tolerated outside parks. Banned in parks + reserves.
- Cultural respect: Atacameño indigenous communities are still present — pre-Columbian sites (Pukará de Quitor, Aldea de Tulor) require respectful behavior.

- Cross-border to Bolivia (Uyuni): 3-day 4WD overland tours exit at the Hito Cajón border. Combines Atacama + Bolivian altiplano + Salar de Uyuni — increasingly popular.
