Itinerary at a Glance

A 15-Day American Southwest Photography Arc

Day 1 — Arrive Las Vegas (LAS). Pick up 4WD. Drive 3 hr to Zion. Stay Springdale (Cliffrose, Cable Mountain Lodge, Desert Pearl).

Day 2 — Zion: Canyon Overlook + Narrows. Pre-dawn at Canyon Overlook Trail (1.6 km easy with a mind-bending Zion canyon panorama). Mid-day Court of the Patriarchs. Afternoon hike The Narrows from the bottom (Temple of Sinawava trailhead, wade as far as you want — Wall Street is 8 km in).

Day 3 — Drive Zion → Bryce Canyon (1.5 hr). Sunset at Inspiration Point or Bryce Point for the first light on the hoodoos. Stay Bryce Canyon Lodge.

Day 4 — Bryce Canyon. Pre-dawn at Sunrise Point (literally named). Navajo Loop + Queen’s Garden (4.5 km moderate) walks among the hoodoos. Mid-day rim drive — Natural Bridge, Agua Canyon, Rainbow Point. Sunset at Inspiration Point. Drive to Kanab (1.5 hr) in the evening to stage for the Kanab corridor.

Day 5 — South Coyote Buttes + The Wave (4WD permit-required day). South Coyote Buttes by BLM permit (advance lottery — apply 4 months ahead at blm.gov; odds are famously low, so have a backup plan). If you win a slot, The Wave’s swirled sandstone is the single most coveted frame in the Southwest — midday for direct light on the swirls.

Day 6 — White Pocket. No permit needed but requires 4WD high-clearance, sandy 4WD access off House Rock Valley Road. Striated rock playground few people see. Arrive for sunrise — warm light on the white-and-orange brain rock.

Day 7 — Toadstools, then drive to Page, AZ (1.5 hr). Morning at the Toadstools (off Highway 89, easy 1 km trail to mushroom-cap rock formations) in the Vermilion Cliffs backcountry. Sunset at Horseshoe Bend overlook. Stay Page or Marble Canyon Lodge.

Day 8 — Antelope Canyon. Photographer tour at Upper or Lower Antelope (Navajo guide mandatory, book months ahead). Light beams in Upper Mar–Oct midday. Afternoon at Horseshoe Bend revisited at blue hour.

Day 9 — Monument Valley (2 hr drive). Drive the 17-mile Valley Drive scenic loop. View Hotel for the iconic balcony shot — book the View Hotel for door-step access. Sunset and sunrise both essential.

Day 10 — Drive to Moab (2.5 hr). Stop at Dead Horse Point State Park (a Colorado River gooseneck overlook of canyon-country scale, but more intimate). Sunset at Mesa Arch (Canyonlands Island in the Sky) — though sunrise is the iconic shot.

Day 11 — Arches NP. Pre-dawn at Delicate Arch (2.4 km / 150 m moderate). Park Avenue, Balanced Rock, Windows mid-day. Sunset at Delicate Arch revisited or Fiery Furnace overlook.

Day 12 — Canyonlands Island in the Sky. Sunrise at Mesa Arch (be there by 5:30am — crowded but the iconic underlit-arch shot). Grand View Point Overlook, Upheaval Dome.

Day 13 — Drive to Grand Canyon South Rim (5.5 hr). Sunset at Hopi Point or Mather Point. Stay El Tovar or Bright Angel Lodge.

Day 14 — Grand Canyon. Pre-dawn at Mather Point or Yavapai. Hermits Rest scenic drive on shuttle. Sunset at Lipan Point. Optional: Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point (19 km / 1,000 m, all-day).

Day 15 — Drive back to LAS (4.5 hr) or fly Phoenix (PHX, 3.5 hr).

Best photographer window: late September to October for fall color (cottonwoods + aspens) + comfortable temperatures + Antelope Canyon beams. Late March to May for spring wildflowers in the deserts + cool hiking. Winter (Dec–Feb) for snow on the Grand Canyon + Bryce hoodoos. Avoid July–August (40–45°C, monsoon thunderstorms).

Useful Info & Physical Difficulty

Physical Difficulty

Beginner to moderate, with optional strenuous:

  • Overlooks: drive-up at almost every park.
  • Narrows (Zion): wade in cold river — neoprene socks + canyoneering shoes. Watch flash-flood forecast (deaths every year).
  • Delicate Arch trail: 2.4 km / 150 m, no shade.
  • Antelope Canyon: short walk on sand with guide.
  • Bright Angel (Grand Canyon): 19 km plateau version, no rim-to-river-to-rim in one day (NPS warns).
  • White Pocket access: HIGH-CLEARANCE 4WD REQUIRED on sandy roads. Get stuck out here and you’re walking 20+ km out.

Weather + Heat Safety

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): 35–45°C low desert (Page, Grand Canyon south rim, Moab). Hike at dawn only.
  • Fall (Sep–Oct): 15–30°C ideal.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): 0–15°C days, below freezing nights. Snow at Bryce + Grand Canyon (8,000 ft).
  • Spring (Mar–May): 15–25°C, wildflowers, wind can be intense.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep): thunderstorms, flash flood risk in slot canyons. Antelope tours cancel if rain forecast within 100 km.

Cultural + Wildlife

  • Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley are Navajo Nation lands — Navajo guides required, follow their rules.
  • No drones anywhere on Navajo Nation or in NPs.
  • Wildlife: mountain lions (rare), rattlesnakes (common — watch foot placement Mar–Oct), big-horn sheep (Zion, Arches), California condors (Marble Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs).

Permits + Reservations

  • NP entry: $35/vehicle/7 days or $80 annual.
  • South + North Coyote Buttes (The Wave): BLM lottery, very low odds. Apply 4 months ahead.
  • Antelope Canyon: tour-only access — book photographer slots months ahead.
  • Zion shuttle: required Mar–Nov in the main canyon. Bicycles OK on the road.
  • Delicate Arch sunset: parking fills by 4pm.
  • Drones: banned in all NPs + Navajo Nation.
