Itinerary at a Glance
A 14-Day Alaska Photography Arc
Day 1 — Arrive Anchorage (ANC). Stock up + acclimate. Sunset drive south on Seward Highway — Turnagain Arm bore tide if timing right, Beluga Point pullouts. Overnight Anchorage or Girdwood.
Day 2 — Drive to Seward (3 hrs) + Kenai Fjords. Half-day boat tour from Seward — Aialik Glacier, Holgate Arm, sea otters, humpback whales, puffins. 6–9 hr cruises Jun–Sep.
Day 3 — Homer + Kachemak Bay. Drive 3 hrs to Homer on the Kenai Peninsula. Homer Spit at golden hour, Kachemak Bay across to the Kenai Mountains. Eagle photography (winter peak Jan–Mar). Stay Land’s End or Driftwood Inn.
Day 4 — Float-plane to Katmai (or boat tour day). Day-trip Beaver flight to Brooks Falls (Jul) for the iconic salmon-leaping-into-bear-mouth shot. Sep for fall color + post-salmon bears. Trip $800-1200/person.
Day 5 — Drive back via Hope or extra Kenai day. Backtrack to Anchorage. Side trip to Hope (ghost town + Turnagain views).
Day 6 — Drive Anchorage → Denali (4 hrs). Stop at Talkeetna for flight-seeing options. Arrive Denali south. Overnight Denali Princess or McKinley Chalets.
Day 7 — Denali shuttle bus (full day). Park road accessible only by bus — 92 miles to Wonder Lake (when road open; post-2021 landslide may limit). Grizzly + moose + caribou + Dall sheep. Mt. Denali shows about 30%% of days.
Day 8 — Denali sunrise/sunset. Stony Hill or Reflection Pond if access permits, otherwise Mile 9 overlook for distant peak. Polychrome Pass for fall color late Aug–Sep.
Day 9 — Drive Denali → Fairbanks (2 hrs). The Fairbanks aurora season runs mid-Aug to mid-Apr — this is your viewing base. Drive to Chena Hot Springs (1 hr) for aurora viewing + ice museum.
Day 10 — Fairbanks day + aurora night. Visit University of Alaska Museum of the North. Murphy Dome or Cleary Summit for clear-sky aurora. Bring −20°C clothing in winter.
Day 11 — Fly Fairbanks → Juneau (3 hrs). Southeast Alaska panhandle. Stay downtown — Goldbelt Hotel or Westmark. Sunset at Mendenhall Glacier visitor center.
Day 12 — Mendenhall + Tongass. Mendenhall Glacier Photo Point at dawn. Nugget Falls hike (3 km, easy) for glacier face close-ups. Whale-watching boat afternoon (humpbacks Jun–Sep).
Day 13 — Chilkat River eagles (ferry up Lynn Canal to Haines, ~4.5 hrs, or 30-min bush flight). Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve — 3,000–4,000 eagles concentrate on the river late Oct through Jan (Nov peak). Out of season this is a long day for fewer birds, but always worth the views.
Day 14 — Return to Juneau and depart.
Best photographer window: mid-Sep for fall color + last bears + first aurora chance. June–July for midnight sun + salmon run (Katmai bears). Mid-Feb to mid-Mar for aurora + winter eagles. Avoid mid-Apr to mid-May (breakup mud season) and Nov (dark, transitional weather).
Useful Info & Physical Difficulty
Physical Difficulty
Moderate. Mix of car-based + flightseeing + boat:
- Denali bus: full day on a school bus, ~13 hrs round trip. Bring layers + lunch.

- Mendenhall Nugget Falls trail: 3 km flat gravel.
- Kenai Fjords boat: 6–9 hr on the water, can be rough — Dramamine.
- Aurora viewing: standing outside −20°C for 2–4 hr. Hand warmers, battery insulation, tripod.
Weather
- Summer (Jun–Aug): 10–22°C, long daylight (20+ hrs in Jun at Fairbanks), mosquitoes mid-Jun to mid-Aug.
- Fall (Sep): 0–12°C, color peak first 2 weeks, first aurora attempts.
- Winter (Nov–Mar): −30 to −10°C interior, −10 to 0°C southeast. Aurora season.
